A concept created partially by Roger Penske, the International Race
of Champions or IROC would pit all star drivers from numerous
venues of racing against each other in similarly prepared cars. The
inaugural year was 1974 and was won by Mark Donohue. While
primarily run on oval tracks, it was also run at Riverside's road
course, Watkins Glen, and at Daytona Speedway's road course. From
1975 to 1989, Chevrolet Camaros were used as the race car
bodies.
For consignment, a 1991 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 coupe with a title
verified 118,453 actual miles. This is a one family car presenting
in mostly original condition.
Exterior
Dark as night, this solid black car paint accented only the three
tri colored Z28 call outs. In front, deep set dual headlights hover
over clear lensed marker light integrated into the fascia and the
distinct dual ducts, though blending with the paint, are still
visible on the hood, a feature not shared with mere mortal Camaros.
In back, tail lights made aggressive with the simple use of black
trim line up over the rear bumper which advertises the mode of
injection, all under a high wing. Body cladding around the bottom
edge of the car includes more ducting for a bit of integrated
aggression. Our 16-inch wheels carry 50 series tires and Camaro
branded center caps. Imperfections include dull and rough surface
on the roof and wing, peeling clear throughout, flex cracks,
inclusions, chips, surface scratches, bubbling, blistering, chin
scrapes, and rust forming in the wheel openings and driver's
door.
Interior
Simple gray cloth door panels are intact with some light patina and
they open to gray cloth bucket seats also showing some age and a
tear on the driver's upper. The rear 2+2 present in good condition
although some staining is noted on one. Our steering wheel fronts a
full instrument cluster behind Plexiglas displaying six gauges
clearly and concisely. The center stack has the A/C levers and
Pioneer aftermarket AM/FM/CD radio just before the center console
begins, housing the shifter and black switchgear, all in nice. Gray
carpet covers the floor with some age evident and the headliner on
this solid roof car is fully intact. A cargo area holds a speaker
in the deep cove and gray carpet also covers this area.
Drivetrain
We're greeted with a relatively clean engine bay where we find the
305ci V8, tuned port fuel injected and rated at 205 horsepower.
It's mated to a 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission that routes
power to GM's reliable 10 bolt rear axle with 2.73 gears.
Undercarriage
It certainly shows some age with surface rust, some pitting and
typical oxidation, but we've seen worse in our day! A single
exhaust runs through a FlowMaster muffler that emits twin tail
pipes for a dual exhaust appearance out back. Power brakes are
divided as front disc and rear drum and suspension consists of coil
springs up front and also in back where they are accompanied by a
torque arm.
Drive-Ability
It might not be as tight as a fresh Z28, but it still delivers a
fine ride with very good handling, straight tracking and the true
F-body experience and body posture. We note the horn, heater
blower, clock and reverse lights don't work but all other functions
on this one family Camaro work as they should. Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
Only 12,542 Camaro Z28's were built in 1991 making them uncommon
today. If you had one in high school and are ready to return to the
glory days, here's an inexpensive option. Don't live in regret like
Uncle Rico: "How much you wanna make a bet I can throw a football
over them mountains?... Yeah... Coach woulda put me in the fourth
quarter, we would've been state champions. No doubt. No doubt in my
mind." Get the Z28 you were always meant to have and leave the
doubt behind!
