Striking 1971 Ford Mustang Convertible for sale. This one-family-owned California car features just 49,000 original miles and was delivered new at Wilson Ford in Huntington Beach, California. Finished in its factory-correct Bright Blue Metallic over a blue vinyl interior with a white power convertible top, it is powered by a 302 V8 paired with an C4 automatic transmission and a 2.79:1 conventional rear axle. Includes both sets of keys and a clear California title.

According to the original owner’s son, Bill, his father purchased the Mustang brand-new from Wilson Ford while the family was living in Huntington Beach. Bill recalls that his father used an upcoming family trip to a swim meet in Las Vegas as the excuse to buy the new Mustang, and shortly thereafter his parents and all three children made the trip together in their new convertible. The kids would even fight over the middle spot in the back seat because whoever sat there could stretch their legs forward between the front seats. His father worked as a doctor at Orange County Medical Center, later UCI Medical Center, and although he occasionally drove the Mustang, it was never a daily driver. Bill recalls that his father later decided to make the Mustang into something of a show car, spending freely to have it beautifully refinished by Swede’s in Orange County. Afterward, the Mustang saw very little use and remained in the family for decades, including approximately 15 years of storage after his father passed away while the car remained with his mother.

The 302 cubic-inch V8 starts readily, runs and idles smoothly, and delivers plenty of power. The C4 automatic transmission shifts effortlessly through the gears, while the power brakes, power steering and suspension feel tight and responsive, making this Mustang comfortable and enjoyable to drive. The engine compartment presents exceptionally well, with a clean, nicely detailed and largely factory-style appearance. Underneath, the Mustang is equally impressive, with remarkably clean and solid floors, structural areas and chassis components showing in beautiful, original condition.

The Bright Blue Metallic finish has a deep, lustrous shine and shows beautifully. The exceptionally well-executed repaint was performed by Swede’s, a highly regarded Orange County paint shop at the time. The quality of that work remains evident today, with excellent gloss, fit and overall presentation. The glass, chrome, trim, grille, lenses and Mustang emblems all show very well. The white power convertible top appears to have been replaced and remains in very nice condition, providing a striking contrast against the blue finish. Factory-style wheel covers and brand-new 215/70R14 whitewall radial tires complete its period-correct appearance.

The blue interior appears to remain largely original and is in outstanding condition throughout. The bucket seats, rear seat, door panels, dash, carpeting and trim have been remarkably well preserved, retaining the honest look and feel of a carefully kept car rather than a heavily restored one. The instrumentation remains clear and attractive, with the odometer showing just over 49,000 miles. The factory Philco AM radio, original steering wheel and other period details remain in place. The hardware, knobs and small details present beautifully.

This is a unique opportunity to own a one-family-owned 1971 Ford Mustang Convertible with just 49,000 original miles and a wonderful California history dating back to new. Its beautifully executed Swede’s repaint, remarkably preserved interior, clean and solid undercarriage, fresh whitewall tires and decades of known family history distinguish it from the typical restored example. From its original purchase at Wilson Ford to the family memories that have accompanied it for more than five decades, this is a special Mustang with the provenance, condition and story that are increasingly difficult to find.
