Cruisin Classics is excited to present to you this 1970 Ford
Ranchero Squire with a 429 Thunderjet V-8. According to the Marti
report, this Squire is one of only 294 produced with this engine &
transmission - making this a very rare Ranchero! This beauty was
built in Atlanta in 1969 and sold in Palo Alto California by Lutz
Ford in late 1970. In the following 56 years, only 83,140 actual
miles have been added and the car has obviously been very well
cared for during that time. Let's dig a little deeper into this
very cool Ranchero...
The 1970 Ranchero is one sporty looking coupe-utility because it
shares the same front end and coke bottle-styling as the Torino.
The Squire package added simulated woodgrain paneling, a deluxe
grille with center crest, hideaway wipers, woodgrain dash trim and
steering wheel inlay, pile carpet, and an electric clock. The data
plate on the car tells us that this car was born with Dark Ivy
Green Metallic paint , an Ivy knit bench seat (TG), and a 429-4V
V-8 engine (N). Looking at the car as it sits before us today, it
wears a respray of it's original color and the exterior woodgrain
paneling is no longer present. The paint is driver-quality
condition with a nice shine and the Ivy Green is a spectacular
color for this ride. The angular hood features sporty indentations
and it sits above a grey eggcrate grille with dual side-by-side
round headlights. Splitting the grille in the center is the
aforementioned center crest badge. The bright chrome bumper below
has integrated turn signals and is angled to match the hood. As you
move around to the side of the car, all of the bright touches
really come into focus - hood reveal, windshield surround, drip
rail molding, dual side mirrors, handles, wheel lip molding, rear
window surround, and bed-rail surround. The fenders feature both
"Ranchero Squire" script badging and "429" badging. Completing the
look from the side view are a set of very nice Magnum 500-style
wheels all wrapped in BF Goodrich white-letter Radial T/A tires.
Around back, the tailgate sports "FORD" block lettering and it's
flanked by tall vertical taillights. Below is another chrome bumper
with a set of polished exhaust tips peeking out from beneath. Take
a look underneath to find a very clean and presentable
undercarriage, a newer gas tank, a newer exhaust, and coil-over
rear shocks.
Under the hood, in an immaculate black engine bay, lies the real
star of this show - a 429ci Thunderjet V-8 that we believe is
likely original to the car. The N-code 7.0 liter Thunderjet engine
was factory-rated at 360hp and 480 lb/ft of torque with a 10.5:1
compression ratio. The block, heads, water pump, intake, and air
cleaner are all dressed in traditional Ford Blue. The engine is
topped off with "Ford High Performance" valve covers, a Holley
Street Avenger 4-barrel carburetor, and a single snorkel air
cleaner with "429-4V" decal. Ahead of the block are billet brackets
for the alternator and the chrome power steering reservoir.
Underneath the block hides a new-looking chrome oil pan. This
powerful big block is mated up to a Ford "Select-Shift" C6 3-speed
automatic transmission that sends power to the rear wheels via a
3.0:1 rear axle. Exhaust travels through cast manifolds and newer
pipes and mufflers before exiting the rear with a rumble. Stopping
power comes courtesy of power front disc and rear drum brakes.
Open the drivers door to reveal a very nice green and black
interior with bright trim and woodgrain accents. The door panels
are green vinyl with bright trim and a drivers mirror toggle and
they're in good condition. A Ford sill plate welcomes you inside
for a seat on the green vinyl bench seat with split back. The seat
is as comfortable as it is good looking. The seat must have been
re-covered or replaced at some point, as the data plate states that
the car was originally outfitted with an Ivy knit bench seat. Both
shoulder and lap seat belts are supplied for the passengers.
Overhead is a black vinyl headliner and underfoot is newer black
loop carpet with black carpeted floormats. Ahead of the driver is a
2-spoke steering wheel with woodgrain trim and a working horn on a
fixed column. Also on the column is a shifter for the 3-speed
automatic transmission. At the front is a crack-free green vinyl
dashpad with a black gauge bezel and a woodgrain lower section that
stretches side to side. The bezel is home to a 120mph speedometer,
a clock (inop.), fuel and temp gauges, and working heat & fan
controls. In the woodgrain portion of the dash is a retro-style
AM/FM digital radio that plays your cruisin tunes through a
standard dash speaker. Ahead of the passenger is an empty glovebox.
Behind the seats is a factory-style jack (no spare), a new
in-package chrome transmission dipstick and tube, and a charcoal
emissions box (part of the evaporative emission control system that
came on the car).
If you're a fan of the coupe-utility format but also want power and
sporty style, you're going to love this Ranchero! An incredibly low
percentage of Ranchero's were graced with the 429 Thunderjet big
blocks and this is one of those very rare and very cool cars! This
very special Ranchero is sure to find a new home fast - so don't
delay - give our friendly staff a call today and be the lucky one
who gets to call this ride their own!
