This 1976 Chevrolet Corvette is a thoughtfully built C3 restomod
that combines the unmistakable styling of the original "Shark"
Corvette with modern LS power, upgraded suspension, steering and
braking, improved cooling, air conditioning, and a completely
refreshed interior. Showing just 47,000 original miles on the
chassis and approximately 3,200 miles since completion of the
build, this Corvette has been extensively updated while retaining
much of the character that makes a C3 special. It is finished in
silver, believed to be largely original paint with the exception of
the front and rear bumpers, and is accompanied by a binder full of
receipts documenting the components and work that went into the
build.
Power comes from a 6.0-liter LQ9-based LS engine producing an
estimated 500 horsepower at the crank. The engine was assembled
with new rod bearings, ported 799 cylinder heads matched to the
rectangular-port LS6 intake, ARP head bolts, LS7 lifters, Cheetah
roller rockers, LS6 injectors, and a COMP 459 camshaft featuring
.617-inch intake and .624-inch exhaust lift. A 92mm throttle body
handles incoming air, while a Holley in-tank fuel pump supplies
fuel and a Holley oil pan completes the lower end. Engine
management is handled by a Holley Terminator X Max system.
Backing the LQ9 is a freshly rebuilt 4L60E automatic transmission
with upgraded internal components and a 3,000-rpm stall converter.
The transmission is integrated with the Terminator X Max and uses
dedicated AN lines routed to an external transmission cooler. Power
is sent to a 1973 Corvette Positraction rear end with 3.55 gearing,
providing a strong combination of acceleration and comfortable
cruising.
Considerable attention was paid to both function and presentation
under the hood. The engine bay was completely refinished in black,
creating a clean backdrop for the LS installation. A black Holley
mid-mount accessory drive keeps the front of the engine compact and
tidy, with the accessories finished in black for a cohesive
appearance. Cooling is handled by a DeWitts aluminum radiator that
has also been powder coated black and paired with dual electric
cooling fans. A custom exhaust system with Flowmaster mufflers
gives the LS-powered C3 an appropriately aggressive exhaust
note.
The chassis has received substantial attention as well. Up front
are new QA1 coilovers, while the rear utilizes Van Steel trailing
arms, adjustable rear control arms, and an updated composite
mono-leaf spring. Steering has also been upgraded with a Borgeson
steering box, improving steering response and feel compared with
the original C3 steering system. The braking system has been
extensively renewed with Wilwood brake rotors, new pads, rebuilt
and O-ring-converted calipers, new brake lines, a new brake
booster, and a new master cylinder. A new parking brake has also
been installed. The Corvette's birdcage is clean, and the underside
presents very well, reflecting the level of attention given to the
overall build.
Completing the stance is a staggered set of US Mags wheels
measuring 18x8 inches up front and 18x9 inches in the rear. The
rear wheels are wrapped in new Nitto NT555RII drag radials to help
put the LQ9's power to the pavement, while new performance
all-season tires are fitted up front. The combination gives the
Corvette a purposeful stance while complementing the upgraded
suspension, braking, and powertrain.
Inside, the cabin has been completely refreshed while intentionally
retaining the original C3 appearance. The black leather seats
received new foam and new upholstery, while new carpet was
installed over a fully Dynamat-treated floor to help reduce heat,
vibration, and road noise. The center console retains its factory
design but has had its chrome trim powder coated black for a subtle
custom touch. A Custom Autosound electronically tuned AM/FM
receiver provides auxiliary connectivity while maintaining a
period-appropriate appearance, and an upgraded sound bar is mounted
discreetly behind the seats.
Modern usability was incorporated without taking away from the
vintage character. A SpeedBox GPS interface operates the factory
mechanical speedometer, allowing the original gauge to function
with the modern drivetrain. Vintage Air heat and air conditioning
have also been installed, with the A/C compressor finished in black
to match the engine bay. New T-top gaskets help seal the removable
roof panels, and the factory-style gauges and lighting are
functioning properly. The clock is currently the only interior
feature known not to operate.
The result is a C3 Corvette that retains the shape, seating
position, removable T-tops, and analog character of the original
car while addressing many of the areas that separate a vintage
Corvette from a modern performance car. With approximately 500
horsepower, electronically controlled fuel injection, an upgraded
overdrive automatic, 3.55 Positraction rear end, QA1 and Van Steel
suspension components, upgraded Borgeson steering, Wilwood braking,
Vintage Air climate control, improved cooling, and a completely
refreshed interior, this 1976 Corvette is built to be driven and
enjoyed. Extensive receipts documenting the build are included with
the car.
