1977 AMC Hornet Wagon
The 1977 AMC Hornet Wagon is a wonderfully preserved example of one
of American Motors' most recognizable and practical designs of the
1970s. With vintage station wagons becoming increasingly difficult
to find-especially in largely original condition-this Hornet offers
plenty of character and nostalgia while remaining an enjoyable
classic that can actually be driven.
Finished in red, the exterior presents nicely for its age and
retains the unmistakable styling that made the Hornet such a
distinctive part of AMC's lineup. The body appears straight overall
and is accented by bright chrome trim, chrome bumpers,
factory-style roof rack, and classic thin whitewall tires mounted
on AMC wheel covers. The large rear hatch and expansive glass give
the wagon its signature profile and provide the practicality these
cars were known for.
One of the highlights of this Hornet is its originality. Rather
than being heavily restored or modified over the years, the car
retains the honest appearance and character of a well-maintained
survivor. It was factory rustproofed, which has helped preserve the
car over the decades. The underside remains solid-looking overall
and displays the normal surface oxidation and aging expected from
an unrestored vehicle of this vintage.
Inside, the Hornet continues its impressive period-correct
presentation with a matching red interior. The front and rear bench
seats show very nicely, along with the red carpeting, door panels,
dashboard and original-style steering wheel. The factory
instrumentation remains in place, and even the rear cargo
compartment maintains its vintage appearance. With two bench seats
and a large rear cargo area, this is a true old-school American
family wagon.
Under the hood is AMC's dependable 258 cubic-inch inline-six,
paired with an automatic transmission. Known for its simplicity,
durability and strong low-end torque, the 258 is an excellent match
for the Hornet. This example runs and drives great and maintains a
largely original-looking engine compartment rather than having been
overly restored or modified.
The car is also equipped with air conditioning, although the A/C is
currently not operational and will require servicing if the next
owner wishes to have it functioning.
Overall, this 1977 AMC Hornet Wagon is a nicely maintained, highly
original example with the kind of character that is becoming
increasingly difficult to find. Between its 258 inline-six,
automatic transmission, red-on-red color combination, roof rack,
whitewall tires, spacious wagon body and largely preserved
condition, it makes for a fun and unusual alternative to the more
commonly seen classics of the era.
Whether you're an AMC enthusiast, collector of original survivor
cars, or simply looking for a vintage wagon that will stand out at
a local cruise or car show, this Hornet is a charming piece of
1970s Americana that's ready to be enjoyed.
