Mercedes-Benz S-Klasse 280 SE, 1985. Six owners, 71,542 km, service
books from new.
DAS BESTE ODER NICHTS. That was the Mercedes promise, and nowhere
was it kept quite so literally as in the W126. The successor to the
W116 arrived in 1979 and was immediately embraced as the benchmark
against which every other luxury saloon had to measure itself.
Bruno Sacco drew a body so perfectly balanced that it lost almost
none of its dignity across nearly two decades. The W126 was the car
you were driven in, or the one you drove yourself as if the entire
world could simply wait for a moment.
This is a car from an age when opulence didn't yet need to announce
itself. No shouting grilles, no chrome for the sake of chrome.
Everything simply added up, from the weight with which the doors
thudded shut to the way the car glided over broken tarmac as though
it were glass-smooth asphalt. Anyone who has ever sat behind the
wheel of a good W126 understands why the Germans still speak of
this generation with a certain wistfulness. This was Mercedes at
the height of its self-assurance, back when building the best car
in the world was still a matter of honour rather than
marketing.
The 280 SE sat at the entry point of the S-Class range, but don't
let that word fool you. The 2.7-litre straight-six with 185 bhp
delivers precisely enough to propel this stately saloon with
fitting suppleness, paired to the famed 722.3 automatic that shifts
as though it costs no effort at all. No frantic turbo antics, no
theatre. Just an engine that does exactly what is asked of it, day
after day.
The story continues on our website, where the full file is kept as
well. 74 photographs including the underside. The service history,
scanned in full. The Carfax report. Paint thickness measured panel
by panel. The original factory brochure to page through. A timeline
from 18 June 1985 to today, with every owner and the mileage year
by year in a single graph.

arrived, it stays with us in Katwijk. This one is in the showroom
and you are welcome to come and see it, no appointment needed. You
buy it here at a fixed price: no bidding, no waiting. Our showroom
in Katwijk, 30 km from Amsterdam Schiphol, is open Mon-Fri 9-18 and
Sat 10-17. Call ahead and it will be standing ready, with someone
free for you.
Within the EU no customs duty arises on this purchase. Registration
tax and registration costs in your own country are not included. We
