Cruisin Classics is pleased to present this 1957 Pontiac Chieftain
Safari 2-Door Station Wagon. This is one of those cars you simply
don't see every day. Pontiac produced only 2,934 of these unique
two-door wagons for the 1957 model year, and according to the cowl
tag, this particular car is number 2,910, making it one of the last
25 to roll off the assembly line! The wagon has developed plenty of
age and patina over the years, and rather than trying to hide it,
the front hood and fenders have been finished to match the rest of
the body, creating one seriously cool rat rod with tons of
character. The red exterior stripe running along the body adds even
more personality. It rides on red-painted steel wheels with chrome
Pontiac hubcaps, wrapped in newer BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires. The
original-style chrome still shines, although much of it has a
naturally aged and hazy appearance. Side-exit exhaust in front of
the rear tires completes the look.
Under the hood is a 1970 Pontiac 400ci V8 backed by a Turbo 400
automatic transmission, giving this lightweight two-door wagon
plenty of Pontiac power. The car is equipped with power steering
and has received a number of recent mechanical upgrades, including
newer shocks, a front sway bar and end links, a newer exhaust
system, new brakes and wheel cylinders, and a new gas tank. The
wagon retains its original-style simplicity with no A/C, and the
heater blower is currently inoperative. The rear hatch operates as
it should, while the window glass is all present but shows its
age.
Inside, some money has been spent bringing the cabin back to life
while still keeping the car's old-school personality. It features
new door panels, freshly upholstered seats, and a completely redone
headliner that looks great. The dash presents well overall, and the
car has a nice vinyl floor. There is no radio, keeping things
simple and fitting with the car's custom rat-rod character. This is
a seriously unique piece of 1950s Pontiac history - a rare two-door
Safari wagon with an especially interesting production number,
big-block Pontiac power, plenty of patina, and the kind of attitude
that makes it stand out anywhere it goes.
