"Was it Henry's stroke, at the age of 75 in 1938, that finally
released his iron grip on the engineers and allowed them to make
some long overdue technical advancements? Or was it that Henry
didn't hold the patent, was cheap enough to avoid paying, and was
smart enough to simply wait, having learned from his Selden patent
infringement adventure? Whatever the case, a chassis, eight
cylinders, a couple of body stampings, and a showroom were about
all the Standard and DeLuxe models shared." Hemmings.com
For consignment, a 1939 Ford 60 series Standard Fordor sedan
showing 68,673 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a PA
title exemption. Newer upholstery, fuel system, headers, and Bendix
brake system are just the tip of the iceberg of the care and
maintenance afforded this stunning '39.
Exterior
"It has the same big, roomy bodies that proved so popular in the
1938 DeLuxe Ford" claims the sales brochure for '39 and it doesn't
take long to recognize the tall cabin, curved roofline, and rounded
edges everywhere on this stately four door. Decked in Black, the
artful trim includes a hook shaped line across the waistline, bold
coverage on the nose, and linear accenting on the grille. Along
with the headlight rings, it's not too much, and not too little and
the contrast of stainless to black is outstanding. The 16-inch
artillery style wheels are painted purple here with the stamped V8
in the hubcaps matching and beauty rings framing them and white
walls surrounding them. Imperfections on the single stage paint
include numerous chips and inclusions about, areas or orange peel
finish, scratches, cracks, light pitting on front metals.
Interior
The doors open up to expose handsome two tone gray cloth panels and
period hardware, all in good shape. Up front, a clean cloth bench
seat in gray presents nicely and is mirrored by the rear bench both
in materials and condition. A vinyl grip wraps the 3 spoke steering
wheel ahead of the black dash with vintage, tan faced gauges with
ivory lettering, art deco in style and each with a torpedo shaped
needle. The center includes ivory toggles and a glossy black glove
box resides to the right. Black carpet is contrasted nicely with
gray mats and is the host to the floor mounted shifter completely
the clean view up front. The headliner is gray and stitched and
looking fantastic overhead and the trunk has a fitted gray mat and
shows cleanly.
Drivetrain
Looking every bit period correct, here's a 239ci flathead V8 under
the hood, rated at 100 horsepower and fueled through a newer
2-barrel carburetor, according to our consignor. A 3-speed manual
transmission is behind it and power is routed through 3.78 gears in
back. Red's headers are tucked underneath and begin the exhaust
process. The car still runs on a 6 volt system.
Undercarriage
Other than some residual oil under the engine, the underside is
clean and dry. The dual exhaust travels through Smithy mufflers and
runs parallel to the back. Drum brakes are at all four wheels with
Bendix front drums now on board. Our consignor states newer wheel
cylinders, shoes, lines, two chamber master cylinder and hardware.
Suspension consists of transverse leaf springs front and rear.
We're also informed that the gas tank, fuel lines, regulator and
electric fuel pump are newer.
Drive-Ability
We take a trip right back to 1939 as if we're proud new owners of
this Fordor Sedan and leaving the showroom floor. The flathead
starts and runs without issue and the car tracks nicely along the
test loop exhibiting zero hiccups from this airy and comfortable
cabin. All functions on board, limited as they were in 1939, all
work as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these
functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot
guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your
purchase.
Obvious work went into this classic Ford and the result is an
uncommon fine example of what once was a common car. More than
400,000 cars came out of Ford plants; the sharp nosed design and
the V8 made Fords the popular choice. Now, the choice is yours!
