"I can't quite explain the magic, but I guess that's the magic of
magic. It just works. I love the cabin with its luxuriant tan hide,
I love the Veglia dials, because they are so similar to those used
by Ferrari at the same time. I love the sound of that engine and
the way it doesn't bang you in the back like a turbo motor, or
concentrate all its efforts for near the red line, but gradually
builds every thousand revs to a rousing crescendo like all the best
road car engines." Goodwood.com, sept 2023
For consignment, a 1991 Alfa Romeo SZ coupe with a title verified
54,996 kilometer, or 34,172 miles. This car comes to the U.S. via
the Netherlands and Japan and although sold and titled to our
consignor as a 1995, he believes the VIN indicates a 1991 model
year. Only 1,036 Alfa SZs were produced.
Exterior
The shape is absolutely unique but the color is not as all SZ
coupes were delivered in Rosso Alfa red. But let's get back to
those body lines, made of thermoplastic composite panels, which
connect a stunted rear quarter with a sloped waistline leading to a
rear pitched trunk seam, and a prominent fender, and a door with
two different edge lines. Window reveals and pillars are matte
black and along with a rear wing, gives the profile a fuselage
appearance and accentuates the raked stance. Elaborate and
specific, the 16-inch wheels add to the uniqueness while up front,
three lights set this car apart and flank the Scudetto central
triangle and a narrow grille. A washboard design is stamped into
the hood for extra aggression and out back, the billboard fascia is
bisected by a smoked light bar over lower fog lights and a single
oval exhaust tip. Imperfections are few and include scratches,
dimpling, chips, especially across the broad front bumper.
Interior
Italians mastered the use of cushioned leather and it starts on the
door inserts here of Beige cowhide mixed with black switchgear, all
framed in Russo. The seats are a wild design, stripped of
unnecessary footage and providing the right amount and location of
support and while the driver's side shows some use, the passenger's
leather is clean and tight. Behind them, the carpeted package shelf
is roomy and also clean. Up front, we find an uncomplicated
cockpit, all in black, with an ergonomic, flat bottomed steering
wheel ahead of a simple dashboard with gauges canted toward the
driver. An AC panel resides in the center stack which cascades
seamlessly to the console, holding the ball handled shifter in a
leather boot accompanied by a row of toggles. Tan carpet covers the
floor along with brown Alfa mats and sculpted leather adorns the
headliner.
Drivetrain
The car is equipped with a 3.0 liter SOHC V6 rated at 210
horsepower and fuel injected. It's mated to a 5-speed manual
transaxle that keeps power to the limited slip rear axle with 3.909
gears. The bay presents in clean driver quality condition.
Undercarriage
It's rust free, driver quality underneath where power disc brakes
are supplied to all four wheels with the rears being inboard. A
single exhaust combines two pipes through a stock style muffler and
snakes its way to the stainless tip. Suspension includes coil overs
at both ends with DeDion axle which consists of a chassis mounted
differential, separate drive shafts, and a rigid tube connecting
the wheels.
Drive-Ability
There's no radio and frankly, with a distinct exhaust note, there's
no want for one by us. The interior provides wide visibility
through the greenhouse and the engine provides good power through
turns and straight tracking. As a car focused on the driving
experience, there are not a lot of bells and whistles here and all
that is present, works as it should. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
Z Motorsports called this "A beautiful beast born of pure Italian
audacity.". SZ stands for Sprint Zagato but while some assembly was
completed by Zagato, the design was done in house at Alfa. And what
a design! If you're ready to take over Cars and Coffee where you
live, stop inside the "Il Mostro" as it's known - the Monster.
