"This is the great one. The ultimate driving machine. And if you
don't know what that means, you're excused. But if when you see
this car you're seized with an uncontrollable urge to plant
yourself behind the wheel, and head for the wide open spaces, then
we're talking to you. The great one is an idea on wheels. The idea
that there's more to driving than just moving from place to place
in isolated indifference. The great one is 400 cubic inches of
glistening engine. The great one is a superb road handling chassis.
The great one is bucket seats, carpeting and a walnut styled
instrument panel. The great one is Pontiac GTO for 1967." From the
1967 television commercial.
For consignment, a 1967 Pontiac GTO 2 door post sedan showing
11,110 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a PA title
exemption. According to our consignor, this car was subject to a
rotisserie restoration which was completed in 2014 and the engine
was rebuilt in 2012.
Exterior
You could have a GTO in one of 16 colors in 1967 and this one wears
a color change to Linden Green Metallic, now in stunning two stage
application and reflecting light like a showroom star. The vertical
headlights flank a grille that works its way to a point in the
center, in line with the hood scoop that tops the flat plain of the
hood. The chrome bumpers are complemented by the bezels of the
stacked headlights and other metalwork on the car is in good
condition. 15-inch Cragar SS wheels fit the part and are wrapped in
letters out 70 series tires. Four part tail lights are new for
1967, an amazing cosmetic feature that never gets old, accompanied
here by sizable straight exhaust tips on each side. Raise your head
a bit and you'll note the attractive flying buttresses surrounding
the rear window like a pair of sails. Imperfections are few and
minor and include some cracking paint at the base of the those
sails and some clear runs.
Interior
Standard black vinyl door cards wear the GTO badge and terminate
with a band of black carpet at the bottom and both doors present in
very nice condition. Low back black grain vinyl bucket seats are
fantastic and have metal trimmed plastic shells and metal control
tabs and the rear bench is also in great shape where each passenger
is provided with an ashtray and window cranks on the matching side
walls. A 3 spoke wood rimmed steering wheel greets the driver,
sharing the column with a big tachometer and shift light. From
there, simulated wood dresses the dashboard and surrounds the
instruments as well as the vent panel and AM radio and a triple
gauge pod has been added underneath. A Hurst shifter rises from the
tunnel that is covered in black loop carpet and is looking clean,
protected by Pontiac branded rubber mats. The black headliner above
is intact and the trunk is spotless and holds a plaid mat and spare
tire secured by the jack base.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, you'll find a clean 1968 400ci L67 V8 with 1967
#670 heads and a Holley 4-barrel carburetor over an Edelbrock
intake. All that is good for 330 horsepower which is routed through
a Saginaw 4-speed manual transmission to a 12 bolt rear axle with
consignor stated 3.73 gears. The car is equipped with power brakes
and power steering and the block is Pontiac blue topped with chrome
valve covers.
UndercarriageClean conditions prevail underneath where the dual
exhaust runs through an X-pipe then Pypes mufflers, finally
terminating through polished tips out back. Power disc brakes are
up front and power drums in back. Suspension includes coil springs
up front and a 4 link with coil springs in back.
Drive-Ability
A comfortable cabin is the introduction to our short ride around
the loop where the car proves to be a good runner with respectable
power, straight tracking, and braking on demand. Of note, the
tachometer, speedometer, odometer, wipers and reverse lights are
not working but all other functions afforded the driver do. While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
Just 7029 post sport coupes were produced in 1967, 2,500 less than
convertibles while more than 65,000 hardtops were produced. As
such, it's the least common of the '67 GTOs and here we have a
fantastic example in a great color and clean environments top and
bottom side alike.
