This 1963 Pontiac Tempest is an extraordinary one-off custom build
created with virtually no compromises. Finished in a striking
metallic brown over a completely bespoke tan leather interior,
virtually every aspect of the car has been reengineered,
fabricated, or refinished. From its radically modified body and
show-finished chassis to its dyno-proven Butler Pontiac powerplant,
this is far beyond a conventional restomod. The sheer scope of the
fabrication, components, engineering, and finish work represents a
substantial six-figure build, with extensive receipts, dyno sheets,
engine specifications, and supporting documentation included with
the car.
At the heart of the Tempest is a Butler-built 459ci Pontiac V8
producing a dyno-proven 795 horsepower. The engine is topped by an
imposing polished supercharger and dual C&S 850 carburetors,
with the induction system extending prominently through the
custom-fabricated hood. An Aeroquip-equipped fuel system supports
the combination, while a custom Be Cool modular cooling system
incorporates a separate transmission cooler and dedicated fan. The
engine compartment itself is finished to show-car standards with
extensive polished and chromed components, braided lines,
fabricated panels, and meticulous detailing throughout.
Power is sent through a Rosler-built Turbo 400 automatic
transmission equipped with a Coan torque converter and back to a
Moser Ford 9-inch rear end. The chassis received equally extensive
attention, featuring a four-link rear suspension, coilovers, power
rack-and-pinion steering, and Wilwood four-wheel disc brakes. Much
of the chassis, suspension, and driveline has been chromed,
polished, or finished to complement the exterior, creating an
undercarriage designed to be every bit as impressive as the top
side of the car. Despite its extreme appearance and nearly 800
horsepower, this Tempest was built as a street-driven car and has
never been professionally raced.
The body has been extensively modified while retaining the
unmistakable profile of the 1963 Tempest. The wheelbase was altered
approximately three inches forward, helping create its dramatic Pro
Street proportions. The drip rails were shaved and smoothed,
exterior moldings were removed, and the fuel filler was frenched
into the quarter panel. Custom inner fenders were fabricated, the
front fenders received enhanced louvers, and the hood was
specifically formed around the massive blower assembly.
Flush-mounted, radiused Lexan front and rear windows with a coated
finish further contribute to the car's competition-inspired
appearance, while the stock side glass remains in place with
tint.
At the rear, extensive hand fabrication includes a custom fuel
tank, rear valance, and prominent fabricated rear spoiler with
support rods. A customized rear panel and taillight treatment
further distinguish the car from a stock Tempest, while side-exit
exhaust outlets just ahead of the rear wheels add another
aggressive detail. Weld Racing wheels complete the Pro Street
stance, with massive 33x20x15 Mickey Thompson Sportsman S/R rear
tires tucked beneath the quarters and 26x6 fronts providing the
classic narrow-front, wide-rear profile.
The interior is every bit as elaborate as the exterior. Custom
bucket seats are finished in tan leather with contrasting brown
patterned inserts, a theme carried throughout the full-length
center console, door panels, and additional interior surfaces. A
completely custom dashboard houses a full complement of AutoMeter
instrumentation, with additional gauges incorporated into the lower
dash. A custom steering wheel, performance floor shifter, race
belts, and color-coordinated integrated roll cage reinforce the
car's performance character while maintaining the high level of
finish found throughout the build.
Street usability was clearly an important part of the project. The
Tempest features working Vintage Air heat and air conditioning,
power windows, electrically operated doors with custom manual-style
handles, and a seven-speaker AM/FM/CD sound system. The custom
treatment extends overhead with a fully finished headliner and
integrated overhead console. Even the trunk received the same
attention to detail, incorporating finished panels, matching
upholstery, color-coordinated chassis structure, a fabricated
aluminum fuel tank, and relocated electrical components.
This is the type of build where the details become more impressive
the closer you look. The extensive hand-fabricated bodywork,
completely bespoke interior, chromed chassis, purpose-built
suspension, show-quality engine compartment, and dyno-proven
795-horsepower Butler Pontiac drivetrain represent an enormous
investment in both time and craftsmanship. The accompanying build
receipts and documentation further illustrate the extraordinary
scope of the project.
For the collector looking for something that simply cannot be
duplicated by finding another example, this 1963 Pontiac Tempest
offers exactly that. It is a fully documented, one-off Pro Street
custom combining exceptional craftsmanship and show-car
presentation with serious Pontiac performance and genuine street
capability. Build receipts, dyno sheets, engine specifications, and
accompanying documentation are included with the purchase.
