GM did the unthinkable at the end of the 2002 model year, they
killed off the Camaro from their line up. The bowtie faithful had 8
long years to wait for the return of the Mustang slayer and in this
writer's humble opinion, the wait was worth it. Retro style, hopped
up horsepower and a slew of options made the new Camaro one for the
record books with 129,405 produced for the 2010 model year
return.
For consignment, a 2012 Chevrolet Camaro 1SS convertible with a
title verified 11,331 actual miles. This is a pampered, two owner
car you may have seen in Ocean City, Maryland and this one has
relatively fresh tires and a newer battery for owner number
three.
Exterior
The Camaro took on a very menacing look for 2012 with its V shaped
front, deep set headlights, long rear scooped hood, raked
windshield and of course the low convertible top. Our example is
bathed in Silver Ice Metallic and has painted orange wide racing
stripes running through the center of this car. The tail light
bezels and the chrome tipped exhaust offer a bit of shiny metal and
billet grilles have been inserted in both the upper and lower front
fascia. True to the window sticker, the RS package is on this ride
and consists of HID headlights with an integrated halo ring, a
NASCAR inspired rear spoiler, RS specific tail lights and the
20-inch wheels, here wrapped in ZR rated tires with a date code no
older than early 2022. The black canvas convertible top remains in
great shape and includes a rear glass window with a defroster.
Imperfections are few and include some curb rash, chin scrapes, a
small scratch and a minor inclusion.
Interior
A sporty feature of the exterior is brought to the door panels in
the form of glossy orange inserts surrounded by dark gray plastic
and a touch of chrome with the actuator. The curved dash adopts the
orange highlighting with a stripe going through the center while up
front, gray cloth bucket seats with contrasting charcoal tops
present nicely and the rear seats, as so often the case, look
untouched. A sea of gray carpeting covers the floors and gives some
foot comfort to the rear passengers too. A very clean center
console races through the seats and has a series of 4 display
gauges in front right next to where it will rise to the dash
center. In this section we note an AM/FM/CD stereo system from the
factory that is also XM Satellite capable. The driver has a rally
wheel to hold on to and in front is a futuristic styled dash with
dual rectangle gauges and a central display between them. A few
features of note are StabiliTrak ESP system as well as an added
roll bar for ultra cool looks and of course, some safety. The trunk
is fully finished and clean.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is an all buttoned up silver and black clad 6.2
liter V8. This mill specs out at 400hp and is fed fuel with EFI.
Behind it, a 6L80E with optional Tap Shift 6-speed transmission
that routes power to the rear axle with 3.27 gears and has limited
slip.
Undercarriage
The underside is testimony to low mileage, clean and black
underneath with only a hint of being driven at all. Front
suspension is MacPherson struts, and the rear is an independent
multilink system. Brembo 4 piston caliper power disc brakes are on
all 4 corners the original exhaust with clean pipes and mufflers
and terminating through dedicated and framed opening in the rear
valance.
Drive-Ability
No surprises here as this pampered pony car looks and performs
almost like new with good power, an ergonomic and comfortable
interior, and great handling for what feels like a big car compared
to the vintage Camaros we are privy to. All functions on this
preserved car work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
Despite the facelift that would come in 2014, all modern Camaro SS
models are essentially turn key show cars, as this one has proven.
Sure, you could also drive it daily, but if you want to keep it
fresh and clean, save this one for special occasions. Ultimately,
that's up to you, the next owner! Ain't freedom grand?
