1970 Plymouth Road Runner Hardtop

"The first Road Runner debuted in 1968, and was an instant success, making serious dents in the sales of the hot selling GTO and Chevrolet Chevelle SS. GM and Ford took one look at the Road Runner's sales and saw that they had to do something, quick, to try and center it. One reason why we saw the more flamboyant GTO "Judge" model of 1969/70, with its bright orange paint and flames on the body side, and Mercury's Cougar "Eliminator", with similar colors/graphics, was in response to the Road Runner." For consignment, a 1970 Plymouth Road Runner hardtop showing 4,884 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This car was restored about 10 years ago and retains its numbers matching drivetrain.

Exterior
A combination of features make the Road Runner a classic muscle car, this one featuring a two stage TorRed exterior, enhanced by the dust kicking decal of the bird itself, all becoming a clever side stripe. The matte black stripes on the hood cover the air grabber scoop and cowl hood with turn indicators. Although it doesn't continue rearward, it is referenced by the horizontal stripes on the decklid over the quartet of silver cut tail lights. Faux ducts on the rear quarter panels add all kinds of character, especially as the stripe emerges from the detail, and 15-inch Mopar Rally wheels look right at home as they should. The front end means business and does the talking for you when you want people to pull right! Imperfections include a few minor inclusions, some chips, bubbling low on panels, orange peel finish, and pock marks.

Interior
Basic black vinyl with silver vinyl accent bands dress the door panels and both appear in good condition. Grain vinyl is used on the split bench, also in black and along with the rear bench, show nicely. A three spoke steering wheel features the cartoon bird in the center and fronts the offset instrument cluster in textured plastic faceplate, two large dials to the left, four small ones to the right. Switchgear and an AM/FM radio complete the features ahead, making way for the star of the show, the Hurst pistol grip floor mounted shifter that rises from the transmission tunnel and black carpet. Vintage Road Runner mats show some acceptable patina and the headliner shows just a touch of looseness but is fully intact. The trunk features a plaid vinyl mat over clean orange paint on the stamped steel floor.

Drivetrain
Wonderfully clean is how we find the numbers matching 383ci V8 with stock OER heads with hardened seats, an AVS 4-barrel carburetor, and a horsepower output of 335. Bolted to the back is the numbers matching A833 4-speed manual transmission sending power to the 8 � " rear where our consignor states a 3.55 gears reside along with SureGrip. Power brakes and power steering are supplied.

Undercarriage
Clean rust free conditions prevail underneath where the dual exhaust runs through FlowMaster mufflers on their way to a polished tip exit. Power brakes are divided as front disc and rear drum and suspension consists of torsion bars up front and leaf springs in back.

Drive-Ability

We have no complaints about this handsome muscle car and all functions available operate as they should. For a modern car to partner with a current cartoon would simply not work. Could you imagine a South Park Prowler or Bluey Buick? It was a moment in time that will never be repeated and turned a pedestrian grocery getter into a fire breathing monster with a sense of humor.
