For Sale: 1974 Volkswagen Type 2 in Savannah, Georgia

Motorcar Studio is pleased to offer this 1974 Volkswagen Type 2 Bay Window Camper Bus. Finished in the attractive factory shade of Neptune Blue, this T2 Kombi is a case study in originality and correctness. Paint meters as original on every body panel except for the nose, which was repainted due to normal wear (no rust or accident history); interior is also nearly all original, aside from new seat covers on the front seats only. This bus has known ownership history to new, with service records dating to 1978 and 119k documented original miles. Complete engine rebuild to 1971cc plus driveline and suspension refresh under present ownership.

Paint and body present remarkably well with no accident damage, and only a few minor dings (no small feat after 52 years and 120k miles of use). Paint meters consistently around 3 mils on every panel aside from the nose, which is an excellent match for both color and finish. Ordered with the rare "Riviera" factory tent which is included with the sale. Excellent original underside with no known rot anywhere (see photos). Factory 14-inch steel wheels were professionally refinished under prior ownership and are wearing Hankook Vantra LT tires. Four matching factory wheels with 27x8.50 General Grabber All-Terrain tires are included with the sale (great for light offroading or if you simply want a beefier stance).

Interior is believed to be mostly original (front seats were re-covered under prior ownership based on the records). Original Formica laminate surfaces (with factory stickers in place). Original linoleum flooring. Original Mobilaire refrigerator. Original Zeigler-Harris sink. We believe the curtains and cushions for the rear seating / convertible bed are original as well.

The present owner undertook a performance engine build and chassis refresh just 2,000 miles ago, and the result is a T2 Bus that drives better than new. The flat four was rebuilt (using the original case) to 1971 cc and is mated to a "freeway flyer" four-speed manual transmission (fully rebuilt along with a new clutch, axles and CV joints). New shocks, sway bars and complete brake system overhaul. More than ten pages of invoices (at a cost exceeding $15k) fully document this work (detailed records available upon request). This camper starts easily, runs and drives exceptionally well, and thanks to the engine and transmission upgrades, can comfortably travel at modern highway speeds.

Included with the sale are the original window sticker, buyer's order, owner's books, several prior "for sale" listings, and five decades' worth of ownership history and service records organized neatly in a three-ring binder. An instruction manual for the tent is also included (along with the tent itself) plus an extra set of wheels.
