Up until about 1982, Buick Regals were relegated to a seasoned
customer base. Simple transportation with classic GM styling was
familiar to loyalists and a great seller. Then in 1982 a special
edition of the Regal was created to commemorate Buick winning at
the NASCAR Grand National race and create a buzz to stimulate
sales. Most of them had a normally aspirated 4.1 liter V6 that put
out 125 horsepower, but they would set in motion the return of the
Buick muscle car and the eventual growth of the customer base and a
younger audience.
For consignment, a 1987 Buick Regal Grand National showing 70,464
miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a PA title exemption.
For many, the quickness of factory GN's was just the starting
point, and aftermarket companies and examples were putting up big
numbers with relatively minor tweaks. Here's one that's beyond
stock, so much so that it's not even black! But it does retain its
numbers matching drivetrain.
Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by
the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws
to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on public
highways in your area.*
Exterior
While the black headlight bezels and grille remain remnants of its
former monochromatic black coverage, this car shines brightly with
deep two stage Dark Cherry Metallic paint. Right angles of the
standard Regal remain also, though the body is embellished with a
front chin spoiler and a subtle rear spoiler, the front one serving
as a funnel to collect air for the intercooler. This solid roof car
also does away with polished window reveals, reverting to the GN's
blackout versions while 15-inch Billet Specialties wheels carry
staggered size tires with a mid 2024 date code for the front, and
an early 2025 date code for the rears. Imperfection to this beauty
include some chips on the nose, scuffs and surface scratches,
unevenness at the B-pillars, general inclusions, a disconnected
corner of front air dam, rock spray and under spray along quarters
and rockers, dings to plastic bumper guards, various scratches.
Interior
Standard GN configuration inside with gray cloth inserts on black
bottomed doors. Black and gray cloth buckets are now legendary and
contain the Turbo 6 logo embroidered on the headrest and the front
seats exhibit some tears while the rears remain near pristine. Gray
leather wraps the thick steering wheel with an extra cover added,
fronting the standard speedometer is in place and as a holdover
from the tame Regals, only goes to 85mph! The boost and RPM's are
indicated with two light bars that light up like Battlestar
Galactica when the car is on, but this car also wears an added
boost gauge on the A-pillar and oil and temp pair in the center
console, one of the most common interior mods you'll see on GN's.
The center stack contains the heater/AC controls and an updated
AM/FM/CD radio while a Scanmaster knock sensor rides the dash pad
where we find some warpage and cracking in the plastic. The center
console houses the gray T-handle shifter while low pile black
carpet was standard and protected here with black carpeted mats.
This solid roof car has a soft gray headliner and in the trunk, the
correct black low pile carpet mat and the space saver spare is in
its factory position, and cross braces have been added behind the
seats for extra stiffness.
Drivetrain
So far, the exterior and interior haven't hinted at any major
modification. But here we have a fully built numbers matching 4.1
liter stroker V6. It's been bored .030 over, has a TA60 turbo,
forged pistons, a Bowling Green stretched intercooler, Turbo Tweak
chip and the fuel system has been upgraded with 55 pound injectors,
a Walbro fuel pump, new tank, sending unit, and voltage booster.
The numbers matching 200R4 4-speed automatic transmission was
rebuilt 2,500 miles ago and includes a 3200rpm stall converter.
Power is routed to the 10 bolt rear axle with Auburn Positraction
and 3.42 gears. A few polished components dress up an otherwise
driver quality engine bay.
Undercarriage
Driver quality under here but clean as the dual exhaust travels
through Hooker aerochamber mufflers on its way to a stock appearing
exit. We note the lack of a catalytic converter. Power brakes are
on board as front disc and rear drums and suspension consists of
coil springs in front and a 4 link with coil springs in back.
Drive-Ability
Power, exhaust note, tracking, all get an A+ from us. This is a
fine running GN in a unique color that's completely functional
other than the trip odometer and the power locks not working from
the driver's door switch. While Classic Auto Mall represents that
these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we
cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of
your purchase.
This cherry ride comes to you with a folder full of build receipts,
so you'll know exactly what you have and what it took to get there.
Like the dozens of GN's that have graced our halls, this one will
be boosting to a new home very soon. Just let us know where to
deliver it.
