This 1952 Chevrolet 3100 is hard to miss. With its timeless styling, attractive green paint, bright chrome, wood bed, and lowered stance it is quite a sight. But this one has a lot more going on than just cosmetics including a fully independent Corvette suspension, desirable 350ci engine, overdrive transmission, and air conditioning. It’s a great example of what makes the classic pickup market so alluring.
In the world of vintage trucks Chevrolet’s 1947-54 family stands tall. Their Advance Design platform was the first pickup redesign after WWII and quickly became the number one selling truck in the country. This example has been refinished in green along with a black visor and running boards along with the correct side view mirrors. Accents include the bright chrome grille that offers plenty of shine along with the Rev 17” wheels. This truck also has a wood bed floor that looks fantastic and has been raised to accommodate the lowered Corvette suspension. Note the rear bumper was deleted to show off the nice tail shape and dual exhaust exits.
While this truck is a pleasure to stare at, it was built to drive. The original Thrift Master inline-6 engine was removed in favor of a 350 ci V8 with all the favorite street features including an aluminum intake manifold, HEI distributor, and 4-barrel carburetor with electric choke. The ram horn exhaust manifolds are a nice touch and feed a custom dual exhaust. Behind the engine sits a 700R4 automatic overdrive transmission for good highway performance. The entire truck rides on a C3 Corvette suspension so it is fully independent both front and rear (which is quite a site with the transverse leaf spring and half shafts). The Corvette’s power 4-wheel disc brakes were also utilized. Power steering is present along with adjustable rear air shocks.
The interior offers much more space than previous models. This one has been redone with dual bucket seats that flank a center console along with a floor shifter. The dashboard retains its classic look but with a set of updated gauges from Dolphin. Note the wood console lid and armrests that match the bed finish. The doors and headliner all look terrific too. Another slick touch is the tilt / telescoping Corvette steering column topped by an appropriate steering wheel. The lights, turn signals, wipers, and horn all work properly. Finally, a must-have these days is the Vintage Air HVAC system that integrates well under the dash.
This 3100 seems to grab attention wherever it goes. It has a fantastic look without being over the top but also has a ton of mechanical upgrades and performs far better than it did back in 1952. And while more than 70 years might have passed since the Advance Design was introduced, its enduring style just seems to get better with age.
