This one is thirty years old, and well, they don't make 'em like they used to.Toyota doesn't build anything like the first-generation Tacoma, the manufacturing world has moved on from cheap and simple trucks. They're rock steady and dependable as well, the result of Toyota's history of building some of the most robust vehicles in the world; because while the Tacoma was an intentionally more refined successor to the Hilux, it lacked none of its legendary reliability and toughness. They're a stalwart of a bygone era, but to the chagrin of modern Toyota sales team, still capable of being your every-day driver despite its 30 years on this earth. This 1996 Toyota Tacoma was hard to pass up. Relatively low miles, all-original paint and interior, and just a perfect slice of that 1990s nostalgia with its marbled-gold side stripes. It's what we all wish Toyota would just build today, instead of the bloated and overly-techy monstrosity it's turned into. No screens, no doo-dads - just a simple truck that'll continue to churn miles for many more decades to come. The original Sunfire Red Pearl paint looks great in the sun, looking as a muted burgundy in the shade while bringing out that subtle red hue in direct lighting. Classic 90s swoop graphics, with a marbled texture, flank the beltline. The paint is in a great survivor condition, it has a few scratches and such, but it's still impressive in person after three decades.Inside, the brown oak interior has held up well. Plastics are all in great shape, the seats are nearly flawless (small stress tear on the side of the passenger seat cushion), and all electronics work splendidly. The AC blows cold, and you've still got the classic pop-out side windows for passive airflow too. There is a Pioneer MVH-S21BT head unit with Bluetooth and USB hookups, the only nod to modernity in the whole truck. The 3.4L V6 makes adequate power for modern traffic, and the R150F five-speed is one of the best-shifting examples we've felt. Everything rolls down the road quietly and smoothly, really showing off how Toyota's efforts paid off in making these things more civilized for the North American market over the Hilux.Photos were shot prior to windshield replacement and dent repair, but are currently noted in the gallery. It's hard to find these things in original shape, with most being used up as 4x4 toys and work trucks - if you've been looking for that classic Tacoma experience, this is the one for you.
