LaFontaine Classic Cars is proud to offer an outstanding example of
one of the most desirable high-performance Mustangs of the
muscle-car era: this 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 428 Super Cobra Jet
Drag Pack 4-Speed. Built at Fords Metuchen, New Jersey assembly
plant, this Mach 1 left the factory finished in Candyapple Red with
the signature black-out hood treatment over a Black Clarion
Knit/Vinyl Mach 1 Hi-Back Bucket Seat interior. Its Marti Report
documents the R-code 428-4V Cobra Jet Ram Air engine, close-ratio
4-speed manual transmission, and highly desirable V-code 3.91
Traction-Lok rear axle. The 3.91 axle was part of the Drag Pack
configuration that brought with it Fords heavy-duty Super Cobra Jet
specification!
What makes this particular Mach 1 especially compelling is its
remarkable long-term history and documentation. The original owner
purchased the Mustang on September 10, 1970 for $2,695 and retained
it for more than five decades. Service and repair records document
the car through the years, followed by an extensive restoration
that began in approximately January 2014. The roughly four-year
project was completed by a restoration shop in State College,
Pennsylvania in January 2018. Sadly, the longtime owner passed away
shortly before the restoration was completed, and his family
preserved the finished Mustang in storage until April 2022. The car
subsequently went to Illinois in 2023 and is now being offered for
its next caretaker.
The restoration presents beautifully today, with the Candyapple Red
paint, Mach 1 graphics and black interior creating the unmistakable
appearance that made the 1969 Mach 1 an icon. More importantly,
this car retains the core components collectors want to see in a
serious Super Cobra Jet Mustang. It is equipped with a correct
9A9-dated 428 engine, RUG-AE2 close-ratio 4-speed transmission, and
V-code 3.91 Traction-Lok rear axle with original tag. The result is
exactly what a properly sorted 428 SCJ should be: a muscular,
responsive and engaging Mustang with the sound and performance to
match its appearance.
Documentation is a major part of this car's story. In addition to
its Marti Report, the Mustang is accompanied by an extensive
collection of service and maintenance records, historical
paperwork, and restoration photographs chronicling its history and
refurbishment. It also retains several particularly desirable
pieces of original documentation, including the original warranty
card, original body buck tag, and original keys in their dealer
sleeve. The VIN identification and door data correspond with the
Marti documentation, further supporting the identity and
configuration of the car.
With its 428 Super Cobra Jet power, Ram Air induction, Drag Pack
equipment, close-ratio 4-speed, V-code 3.91 Traction-Lok rear axle,
desirable Candyapple Red presentation and exceptional ownership
history, this Mach 1 checks many of the boxes serious collectors
look for. Equally at home on the show field or being exercised on
the road, it is a beautifully restored, well-documented example
backed by more than five decades of history. After spending the
overwhelming majority of its life with its original owner and
family, this 1969 Mach 1 428 Super Cobra Jet Drag Pack is ready for
its next chapter.
