The first-generation Ford Bronco was introduced for the 1966 model year as Ford's answer to the growing market for compact four-wheel-drive vehicles. The Bronco was offered in several body styles and was designed to provide a combination of off-road capability, utility, and everyday drivability. For 1968, the Bronco continued with its compact body-on-frame design and available four-wheel-drive system, while the lineup was powered by Ford's small-block V8 and inline-six engines. The Bronco quickly developed a reputation as a capable off-road vehicle and became popular with outdoor enthusiasts, ranchers, and drivers looking for a versatile 4x4. The first-generation Bronco would remain in production through 1977 before being replaced by the larger second-generation model.
