Introduced in 1971, the R107-generation SL succeeded the revered W113 "Pagoda" as Mercedes-Benz's flagship roadster. So robust was its construction, and so advanced its safety engineering, that company engineers nicknamed the prototype der Panzerwagen, or The Armored Car, well before its public debut. By 1986, Mercedes-Benz offered the range-topping 560 SL exclusively to North American, Australian, and Japanese buyers. Fitted with a 5.5-liter V8 producing 227 horsepower and paired exclusively with a four-speed automatic transmission, the 560 SL stood as the most powerful and final expression of the R107 line sold in North America.

Built in January 1987, this 560 SL was specified in Pearl Grey Metallic paint with a Grey leather interior. As offered in North America, the R107 boasted an extensive equipment list, including automatic climate control, heated and electrically adjustable exterior mirrors, illuminated vanity mirrors, a folding front armrest, an anti-theft alarm system, and a Becker Mexico Grand Prix radio, along with heat-insulating glass and a black soft top.
