The fourth-generation Toyota Supra (chassic code A80) began development in early 1989 and was officially released in 1993. Sharing development and its platform with the Soarer (sold here as the Lexus SC), the Supra was the company's de facto sports car. While the regular Supra offered 220hp from a naturally aspirated Inline-6, the Turbo model offered a twin-turbocharged (now sequential instead of parallel) variant (the nearly bulletproof 2JZ-GTE) produced 321hp as the high-performance option. With the ability to attain 60mph from a stop in only 4.6 seconds and on to a top speed of around 160mph, the Supra Turbo was the equal of nearly any sports car of the period.
Available as a "Sports Roof" targa or a hardtop, the choice between the two engines, and in either a manual or automatic, the A80 Supra could be configured as a comfortable grand tourer or a near-supercar performer. The hardtop Turbo was offered for only 1993 through 1995 in extremely limited quantities; only 269 were produced for the US market during that time. Providing increased structural rigidity and lighter weight than the targa, the hardtop - especially with the manual transmission - is the best choice for enthusiasts. The Supra attained legendary status throughout the world from its incredible tuning potential.
