1978 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz

This 1978 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz is a low-mileage, one-family-owned example finished in Mahogany over a matching red interior and showing just over 28,000 original miles. It was purchased new on July 20, 1978, from Carlson Cadillac in Salt Lake City, Utah, by the current owner's mother-in-law, who worked in academia. She later lived in Austin, Texas, where the Cadillac remained in her care for many years before passing approximately 20 years ago to her daughter and son-in-law. It has remained within the same family since new.
The family has consistently represented the 28,000 miles as original, and an unusually good collection of historical records strongly supports that history. A Texas registration record documents 23,585 miles in 1999, followed by an Austin service receipt showing 23,657 miles in 2000. After coming to California, a Putnam Chevrolet-Cadillac service record documents 27,862 miles in 2002, while subsequent service and California emissions records show approximately 28,500 miles between 2014 and 2019. Together with its continuous family ownership, the paperwork provides a remarkably consistent mileage trail spanning more than 25 years.
Adding considerably to the Eldorado's appeal is its surviving original literature and documentation. Included are the original warranty booklet, owner's manual and Consumer Information brochure, along with registration documents, dealership and independent service invoices, and numerous California emissions records. Collectively, the paperwork provides an unusually detailed look into the life of this nearly 50-year-old Cadillac.
After an extended period of limited use, the Eldorado was recently recommissioned with considerable attention paid to its mechanical, fuel, ignition, emissions and air-conditioning systems. Recent servicing included repairs to the intake and vacuum systems, replacement of numerous aging components, ignition and carburetor servicing, cooling-system work, installation of a new muffler, and attention to the emissions equipment. The engine compartment was also extensively cleaned and freshened, including refinishing the valve covers. Considerable time and effort went into returning the Cadillac to proper running condition, and it has now passed California smog.
The air-conditioning system was serviced with new seals and O-rings and refrigerant and now blows ice cold. The 425 cubic-inch V8 starts readily, runs and idles nicely following the recent recommissioning, and the automatic transmission delivers the smooth, relaxed driving experience expected of one of these big Eldorados.
The red interior is one of the strongest areas of the car and presents remarkably well for its age. The seating, carpeting, door panels, dashboard and surrounding trim have survived nicely and retain the wonderfully plush character for which these late-'70s Eldorados are remembered. The woodgrain applique on the steering wheel has cracked and separated with age, with the remaining pieces retained in the glovebox. Power accessories and Cadillac's extensive complement of luxury equipment make the cabin a wonderfully comfortable place to spend time.
Additionally, the trunk is exceptionally well preserved, retaining its original-style rubber mat and liners along with the jack and spare tire, further complementing the nicely preserved interior.
Although the mileage is exceptionally low, the Cadillac was parked outdoors in California when not being used during much of the past two decades, and the exterior reflects that exposure. The car was repainted sometime earlier in its life, and that older repaint is now tired, with deterioration most noticeable across the upper horizontal surfaces. There is also some overspray on portions of the trim, age to the wheel finish and peeling chrome on the front bumper. It is best described as a good 10-footer rather than a cosmetically restored or preserved example. It still has plenty of presence going down the road, but buyers looking for show-quality paint should expect to eventually address the exterior.
An aftermarket power sunroof was installed during the car's life. It does not currently sit completely flush when closed, although it seals and does not leak. The tires are considerably aged and should be replaced before regular road use.
There are a couple of additional mechanical items that we want prospective buyers to be aware of. The heater has been bypassed, and we believe the heater core will need replacement. The front CV axle boots are also torn and leaking grease. Rather than continuing to invest in areas that the next owner may choose to address differently, we elected to leave these items as-is and disclose them clearly.
While this isn't a show car or freshly restored example, it is an unusually interesting one-family-owned, 28,000-original-mile Eldorado with a compelling documented history, a very nicely preserved interior and considerable recent mechanical recommissioning already completed. The contrast is fairly straightforward: the interior and trunk have survived exceptionally well, while the exterior shows the effects of years of outdoor California storage. We believe the best approach is to present the Cadillac honestly for what it is—a low-mileage, documented driver with cosmetic and age-related needs rather than attempting to portray it as a preserved collector car.
With its enormous proportions, unmistakable late-1970s styling, 425ci V8, wonderfully preserved interior, ice-cold air conditioning and a family history stretching all the way back to its July 1978 purchase, this Eldorado Biarritz offers a tremendous amount of vintage Cadillac character and an unusually well-documented story.
