For Sale at Auction: 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 in Newport, Rhode Island

Vehicle Description

Chassis No. 111.025.12.004436

Just 1,390 2.8-liter inline-six-powered 280 SE Cabriolets were produced between 1968 and 1971, and this example is rarer still, one of the last few built in distinct low-grille form. That added power allowed for a fuller slate of factory amenities and easier open-air grand touring for four, all in unmistakable style. When production ended in 1971, the 280 SE Cabriolet remained Mercedes-Benz's definitive four-seat convertible for the next two decades, making the final examples particularly sought after.

This example was reportedly sold new in Greenville, South Carolina, and remained in long-term ownership for decades, per previous research. It is well appointed, with a column-shifted automatic transmission and a long list of factory-supplied features, including power steering, power disc brakes, and independent suspension, along with optional air conditioning, power windows, and a Becker Grand Prix AM/FM radio. The car is the subject of a recently completed comprehensive restoration in the summer of 2026. The bodywork received a fresh coat of Tunis Beige Metallic (462) and a new brown convertible top was fitted. Inside, it was reupholstered in fresh Black leather with refinished burled walnut trim.

Today, more than 50 years later, the W111 series Cabriolets remain wonderful grand touring cars with timeless elegance. Combining its freshly restored condition with its rare and sought-after low-grille configuration, this Cabriolet is sure to be a beloved icon anywhere it goes.
