Building on the Mark I, the modern saloon introduced in 1955 as the 2.4-liter and Jaguar's first monocoque model, the Mark II retained its predecessor's elegant design by William Lyons and its inline six-cylinder double overhead camshaft engine. While remaining steadfast to the classic Jaguar formula, it also introduced a number of significant improvements, including modern four-wheel disc brakes, generous glass areas framed by slim chrome pillars, and a wider rear track for improved handling and road holding.

Offered with 2.4- and 3.4-liter engines, the Mark II was also available with the more powerful 3.8-liter unit, which was successfully campaigned in circuit racing and international rallying, building an impressive record of victories, including the Tour de France Automobile from 1960 through 1963.

This Jaguar Mark II 3.8 made its way from the Coventry factory to the United States, on the Fourth of July 1960, where it was delivered new in California to Nancy Ann Rish, according to the original delivery invoice, specified with Cream and Biscuit livery in left-hand drive with a manual transmission and overdrive, as well as optional chrome wire wheels, radio, heater, side-view mirrors and seat belts.

Rish kept the car for nearly four decades, selling it only in 1997 to Mark Harden of Pennsylvania. Complete and in satisfactory condition, the car underwent an extensive restoration by Barlow & Company of Newton, New Hampshire. Emerging from three years of work finished in period-correct Carmen Red with black leather upholstery, the car was restored to such a high standard that it went on to win the 2001 JCNA Concours with a score of 99.37 points.

Offered with an impressive history file comprising original sales documents, service and parts invoices from its first ownership, and receipts for its extensive restoration, the car is also accompanied by its jack, nearly complete tool set, and matching spare chrome wire wheel. Retaining its matching-numbers 3.8-liter engine and body and displaying the attractive patina of an older restoration, this Mark II is a rare and exceptionally well-documented example, certain to appeal to the most discerning collector.
