For Sale: 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am in Columbus, Ohio

Cruisin Classics is excited to present to you this stunning low-mileage 1979 Pontiac Trans Am. This second generation Trans Am comes to us fresh from a recent "restofication" (as the builder referred to it) and it looks fantastic! The car boasts only 19,062 actual miles and it comes with an original build sheet, window sticker, and receipts for most all of the parts used in the build. We were told by the builder that they bought it from the second owner, then went to work making it a better running and driving car than it was when new while still retaining as much originality as possible. We decoded the trim tag and it perfectly describes the car we see today - a Mayan Red Trans Am with black cloth bucket seats, a black interior, and Fisher T-tops. According to the builder, the car still retains about 70% of it's original paint and the "screaming chicken" hood decal is original. The Mayan Red paint is striking on the car and it is still in good driver quality condition with a nice shine. At the front of the car you'll find a shaker hood with a breather adorned with T/A 6.6 decals. Although this was originally a 4.9 liter 301ci V8 car, these decals accurately reflect what's currently hiding beneath the hood (but we'll dig deeper into that shortly). Ahead of the hood is the redesigned for 1979 nose with individual headlight buckets and the grilles moved down beneath. Moving to the side of the car the sporty good looks are impossible to ignore. Front and rear wheel flares, fender vents, factory T-tops with tinted glass, dual body-color sport mirrors, hideaway wipers, color-keyed handle inserts, and a screaming chicken decal on the rear pillar, and a brand new set of 15" snowflake wheels wrapped in new white-letter BF Goodrich Radial T/A's all come together to help create the look that made this the greatest sales year ever for the Trans Am. Around back is the iconic 3-piece rear spoiler with Trans Am decal and a louvered full-width taillight panel with hidden gas fill door. Twin chrome Pypes exhaust tips poke out from the sides of the rear quarters and emit an awesome growl. Prepare to be impressed when you look underneath this ride. We are told that the undercarriage had been heavily undercoated early in the car's life, but that has all been removed and now what you see is immaculately clean freshly painted black. There is a new gas tank, new brake lines, and a new 2 �" stainless steel X-pipe exhaust with mufflers from Pypes. Being a WS6 car from factory, this Trans Am is equipped with a heavier duty suspension with a 3/4" rear sway bar, firmer bushings (freshly replaced), tighter steering geometry, and the aforementioned 15X8 snowflake wheels. This WS6 handling package helped the Trans Am get named the best handling car of the year in 1979 by Car and Driver magazine.

Lift the hood of this Pontiac to find an engine bay that will make other Trans Am owners jealous. The original underpowered 4.9 liter 301 V-8 is now gone and it's been replaced by 1977 6.6 liter 400ci Pontiac block that was rebuilt so recently that it only has a handful of miles on the fresh break-in oil. The rebuild included a new aluminum Edelbrock Performer D-Port heads, an Edelbrock cam that's the same as what came in Ram Air IV cars, and an Edelbrock Performer intake. Topping off the engine are black "Pontiac" valve covers, a Holley Brawler 4-barrel carburetor, and a red breather/air cleaner. This beast of a V-8 is mated up to a brand new Tremec TKX 5-speed manual transmission with a new clutch. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 10-bolt rear axle with limited slip differential and factory 3.08 gears. This is a perfect combination for aggressive driving as well as freeway cruising, and everything in between. Exhaust flows through headers before heading on back to the new Pypes X-pipe exhaust. Other highlights include power steering, a Cold Case radiator, and a new battery (4/25). Much needed stopping power comes courtesy of 4-wheel power disc brakes (only available as part of the WS6 package) with a new booster, master cylinder, and lines. The whole engine bay is painted flat black and it is exceptionally clean and organized.

Inside the cabin, this Trans Am presents like the under 20K mile car that it is - and it's absolutely gorgeous! Upon opening the door, the courtesy light comes on to illuminate a black factory interior that practically begs you to hop in and go for a cruise. The door panels are a mix of black vinyl, carpet, and trim with a toggle for the driver's mirror. The door panels look like new, but they are original to the car. Bright Fisher sill plates lead the way inside to fresh new black pile carpet. The seating consists of buckets up front and bucket bases with a bench back in the rear. The seats are dressed in soft black velour fabric with black hobnail pattern inserts. Just like the door panels, the seats are original to the car and they are in flawless condition with no visible demerits to be found. Between the front buckets is a black vinyl center console with an armrest/storage box and a Hurst shifter with a black rubber boot and original 4-speed pattern knob (though the actual shift pattern is that of a 5-speed Tremec). Ahead of the driver is a like-new black leather-wrapped steering wheel with a working horn on a fixed column. Beyond the wheel is an original crack-free black vinyl dash with a machine-turned aluminum gauge bezel that screams "muscle car". In the bezel are a tachometer with working clock, a 100mph speedometer, and gauges for oil, water, fuel, and volts (all of which work). Also in the bezel are controls for the lights, the working 2-speed wipers, and the working heater & fan. In the center of the dash is the original AM/FM factory radio that plays your cruisin' soundtrack through a speaker atop the dash. When you turn the stereo on, the new power antenna on the driver's fender goes up to find a station, just as it should. Ahead of the front passenger is a grab handle (for when driving gets a little "spirited") and a glovebox with an original owners manual. Overhead are the factory glass T-tops and a tight black vinyl headliner. Around back you'll find a carpeted trunk that contains a mini spare, a factory-style jack, and black vinyl GM T-top storage bags.
