The 1999 Corvette Fixed Roof Coupe (FRC) was the direct predecessor
to the C5 Z06 and was built as the lightweight, performance-focused
Corvette of the lineup. Every production FRC came with the
345-horsepower LS1 V8, 6-speed manual transmission, and Z51
Performance Handling Package; its permanently fixed roof made the
chassis roughly 12% stiffer and about 80 pounds lighter than the
regular coupe. Chevrolet produced only 4,031 FRC Hardtops in 1999,
and the basic FRC body and performance philosophy became the
foundation for the 385-horsepower Z06 in 2001.
The 1999 Fixed Roof Coupe became far more popular than Chevrolet
expected, with sales reportedly exceeding their original
expectations by nearly threefold. Its success helped lead Chevrolet
to develop the 385-horsepower Z06 for 2001, using the lightweight
and rigid FRC body as its foundation, and the Z06 would continue
through the remainder of the C5 generation. Because of its limited
production, unique history, and direct connection to the
development of the Z06, the FRC has become increasingly popular and
collectible. Many of these cars were modified, raced, or turned
into track cars because the fixed-roof design provided a lighter
and stiffer platform, making clean original examples increasingly
difficult to find. We probably see only one FRC a year at Corvette
Warehouse, making this a very cool, rare Corvette with a tremendous
amount of history behind it.
The "Billy Bob" nickname actually came from former Chevrolet
General Manager Jim Perkins, a Texan, when the FRC was originally
being planned as a cheaper, stripped-down entry-level Corvette for
the budget-minded "Billy Bobs" of the world. Chevrolet ultimately
abandoned that idea and turned the FRC into the exact opposite, a
lighter, stiffer, manual-only performance Corvette that became
known as the "Hardtop for Hardcores." That unusual history,
two-year 1999-2000 production run, low production numbers, and its
direct connection to the birth of the C5 Z06 are what make the FRC
important to Corvette history today
