For Sale: 1978 Chevrolet Camaro in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1978 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Coupe

"It'll put butterflies in your stomach, a lump in your throat and a smile on your face. It's exciting, it's virile, it's a legend. Owning and driving a Z28 is a rare experience enjoyed most by those who enjoy driving the most. Exclusive to Z28 are the louvers in the front fenders and the simulated air scoop in the hood." From the 1978 Camaro brochure.

For consignment, a 1978 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 coupe showing 23,677 miles. This is a one owner car with a fully rebuilt, (and built!), 350ci V8 under the hood which our consignor states has less than 100 miles clocked, and its numbers matching transmission. It's never seen winter and comes to you with records, receipts and boxes of original parts.

Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on public highways in your area.*

Exterior
Topped by an unmistakable wedge shaped intake duct on the hood, the Z28 was an outward expression of performance that also included things like a front air dam and wheel flares, fender vents, and of course, a rear spoiler. Our stripeless example is bathed in Black paint and retains subtle accents including decals that frame the hood scoop and a triple colored outline anywhere Z28 appears. The gold emblems on the sides are complemented by the 15-inch aluminum wheels with 235/60R15 tires that have an early 2023 date code. This is a solid roof car and the louvers on the rear window are a period correct piece de resistance; everyone who had an F-body back then wanted louvers too! Meanwhile, this original car shows imperfections that include inclusions, scratches, (including long ones on door), faded decals, light surface rust at window surround and rocker panel, chips, scuffs, and dry rubber panel seals.

Interior
A sort of houndstooth insert dresses up the camel vinyl door panels and both doors are immaculate. The pattern also fills the inserts of the tan cloth seats and along with the rear 2+2, left us relatively amazed at their near pristine condition. The typical rope wrapped spokes of the steering are in place along with an introduced stitched rim covering fronting a clean dashboard with aluminum faceplate and black faced gauges canted towards the driver and surrounded in tan plastics that present very nicely. The center console is in great shape too, and houses a shifter in a central depression filled with a rubber boot. A touch of patina is noted on the armrest where a small crack appears, but the tan carpet below remains in good condition, the headliner is fully intact with a dimple or two, and the trunk has a gray vinyl mat and original space saver spare.

Drivetrain
Under the hood, we find a clean engine bay housing a period correct 350ci V8, originally rated at 185 horsepower, now containing a Howard's towing/RV cam, Brodix IK180 heads, an Edelbrock EPS intake under a QuickFuel Slayer 600cfm4-barrel carburetor. It's mated to its numbers matching T10 4-speed manual transmission that routes power to the 10 bolt rear axle with 3.73 gears and Positraction.

Undercarriage
Clean on the underside too where dual exhaust travels through Xlerator mufflers and terminates through exposed tips behind each rear wheel. There is no catalytic converter attached. Power brakes are on board as front disc and rear drum and suspension is factory standard coil springs ahead and leaf springs behind.

Drive-Ability
We step back in time and it's hard to believe it's nearly 50 years old! The clean and comfortable cabin sets the tone for a pleasure ride with good power, a great sound, and typical excellent F-body handling. We note the rear defrost and wipers are not working but all other functions on this well preserved Z work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

This may not represent a rare car; more than 54,000 Z28's were produced in 1978. But to find a one owner car in such great condition is a rare find today. This is a shining example of an iconic 70's F-body and if you were in high school in the early 80's, this was the car to have! Now it's time to finally make that happen!
