For Sale at Auction: 1970 BMW 2800CS in Newport, Rhode Island

Vehicle Description

Chassis No. 2280121

Introduced for the 1968 model year, BMW's E9 coupe carried the mechanical layout of the "Neue Klasse" with sleek coachwork built by Karmann. Its long doors and low, unbroken beltline drawn from the earlier 2000 CS. The 2800 CS launched the family with a 2.8-liter inline-six, with this example benefitting from a comprehensive suite of upgrades completed under prior ownership. Most notably, the engine was upgraded with a 3.4-liter M30 inline-six paired with a five-speed manual transmission. The car was further fitted with four-wheel disc brakes, Bilstein shock absorbers, and 16-inch Coupeking Alpina-style wheels, and the body was reported to have been refinished in period-correct Polaris New Metallic during this same period.

Before the current owner's acquisition of the car in 2024, additional enhancements were carried out, as noted by previous research, stating with fitting a Megasquirt fuel injection system. A new clutch kit, resurfaced flywheel, rebuilt steering box, rebuilt power steering pump, refreshed tie rods, and replacement exhaust system were also installed. Inside, the dashboard, rear deck panel, and door cards were retrimmed. For increased comfort, an Alpine head unit and an air conditioning system were added. In total, more than $46,000 was invested into the car between 2018 and 2022.

Presented in Polaris New Metallic over tan leather with a CSL-style front spoiler, Hella driving lights, and dual side mirrors, this 2800 CS pairs its handsome Karmann coachwork with sought-after mechanical upgrades. Blending this car's thoroughly improved character with the sleek and timeless styling of the E9 coupes, this well-sorted example stands out as a desirable and well-appointed entry into BMW's early grand touring line.
