For Sale: 1992 Opel Kadett in Katwijk, Netherlands

Vehicle Description

Wittdorf. That is the out-of-the-way little village near Osnabrck where Opel once had the Kadett Cabrio reworked, but in everyday speech it simply became the convertible for the common man. And that is exactly what this thing is all about. While the neighbour buried himself in debt for a Golf Cabriolet with that aluminium hoop hanging overhead, the level-headed German chose this Kadett. No showing off, no airs and graces. Just a roof that can go down when the sun finally decides to break through above the A31.

A quick trip back in time. The Kadett E came onto the market in 1984 and was immediately crowned Car of the Year, a title that these days carries about as much weight as a free keyring at the petrol station, but that back then genuinely meant something. The convertible version was handled by Bertone, the same Italians who had already graced the most beautiful Alfas with their lines. And you can tell: where the closed Kadett always looked a touch prim, the convertible suddenly had something mischievous about it. Open, low, and with that distinctive roll bar that told you it meant business without there being anything remotely sporty under the bonnet.

Because let us be honest: 75 bhp from a 1.6 litre four-cylinder is no recipe for a pirouette through Paddock Hill Bend. This car was not built to make hearts beat faster on the straight, but to cruise at a snail's pace through some quaint seaside town on a balmy evening while you pretend you have all the time in the world. And that, dear reader, is precisely the charm. The C16NZ engine burbles obediently along, the five-digit odometer does its brave best, and the wind blows wherever it pleases.

Anyway, back to the Kadett on offer here. And what a story this example has. In May 1992 it rolled off the line in genuine JG Irischgrn, delivered by Emil Reuschel in Mnchen, Vertragshndler der Adam Opel AG. Since then there has been one owner. One. Somewhere in all of Bavaria lived someone who cherished this car as though it were a family member, and you can read that back in the paperwork that comes with it. Annual Opel inspections in 1993, 1994, 1997, neatly with brake fluid changes included. In 2001 even a complete underbody treatment with DINOL and cavity protection, with the condition assessed as "sehr gut". That is how you look after a car.

The anthracite-coloured cloth upholstery is still fully present, tidy and in its place. The original documentation runs right up to the recent German MOT, where in 2022 the car was even officially classified as an Oldtimer: "kraftfahrzeugtechnisches Kulturgut" is written there in black and white. Cultural heritage on four wheels, according to the German testing authority. Who am I to argue with that.

This is not a car for impressing anyone on a fashionable high street. This is a car for someone who understands that pleasure does not lie in horsepower, but in the sound of the wind, the click of the roof folding back, and the glances from people over fifty smiling as they think back to their first driving lessons. A time capsule from an era when a convertible was still allowed to be just a convertible, without wifi, without lane-keeping sensors, without fuss.

In short: an honest, complete and lovingly preserved slice of the nineties, with a history you can recount with a straight face at any classic car meeting.

Green, open, and stubborn enough never to have stood out. Now it is your chance.
