The BMW Isetta was one of the most recognizable microcars of the
1950s and became an important part of BMW's history during the
postwar era. Originally developed in Italy by Iso, the Isetta was
licensed and produced by BMW beginning in the mid-1950s. Its
distinctive egg-shaped body, compact dimensions, and front-opening
door made it unlike virtually any other vehicle on the road. BMW's
version was offered with a small single-cylinder motorcycle-derived
engine, providing economical transportation at a time when fuel
efficiency and affordability were especially important. The Isetta
became particularly popular in Europe and helped BMW establish a
foothold in the small-car market during a pivotal period for the
company.
