For Sale: 1974 Fiat 124 in Katwijk, Netherlands

Vehicle Description

Fiat 124 Spider Abarth Rally from 1974. This is a genuine Abarth version, so not a replica or a conversion, but a pure and rare homologation model developed specially for rally sport back in the day. Cars like these were built in limited numbers to make entry into international rally competitions possible, and that is exactly what makes this model so beloved among collectors and connoisseurs today. Technically, the Fiat 124 Abarth Rally clearly sets itself apart from the standard Fiat 124 Sport Spider. This version comes with a lightweight body featuring aluminium doors among other things, complemented by various fibreglass panels to keep the weight as low as possible. On top of that, the car has original magnesium wheels, an independent rear suspension with McPherson construction, a limited-slip differential and a manual five-speed gearbox. Everything about this car breathes motorsport and function. The 1.8 litre twin cam engine delivers 128 bhp in standard trim. This particular example was originally delivered in the Netherlands and has a remarkable history. The car has been in the hands of the same family for no less than the last 20 years, which adds to its authenticity and provenance. There is also a story that it once stood on the Amsterdam Motor Show stand of the Dutch national police traffic division, right next to the Porsche 911. Whether this specific example was actually used by the police cannot be proven, but the fact that it is fitted with the exact German-made Targa roof the police also drove gives plenty of room for discussion. It does paint an interesting and fitting picture of the role this car played back then as a fast and capable service vehicle. With chassis number 124CSA0064380 and engine code 132 AC4 000, this is a correct and genuine Abarth example. A unique chance to own a piece of rally history in a version that rarely appears on the market. The car was resprayed once in the past and is in tidy, thoroughly usable condition, not restored. Sadly only the bonnet was replaced at some point by a standard 124 item, but it still has the Abarth-specific aluminium doors and polyester boot lid. Drives well and sounds fantastic. There is documentation of a recent engine rebuild, including new pistons, crankshaft, camshaft, bearings and seals, ground valves, rebuilt carburettors, new spark plug leads, etc. Some cars are time machines. This one has a scorpion on the bonnet. **Special features** - Genuine Abarth version - Homologation model with limited production numbers - Originally delivered in the Netherlands - Kept within the same family for 20 years - Aluminium body parts and lightweight construction - Original Campagnolo rims - Independent rear suspension - Limited-slip differential and 5-speed gearbox - Extremely rare and value-retaining classic With an espresso in hand and Adriano Celentano playing in the background, Nick Slinger
