In the 1960s, Ford found itself in the midst of a period of enormous innovation. In both America and Europe, substantial investments were made in new models and modern technology to stay ahead of the competition. Where many manufacturers stuck to proven concepts, Ford dared to look further. This led to one of the most remarkable projects in the brand's history: Project Cardinal. Originally intended as a compact, front-wheel-drive Ford for the American market, complete with an entirely newly developed V4 engine. The American management ultimately found the concept too progressive for its own customers, after which the entire project was transferred to Ford Germany. There it would develop into the Ford Taunus 12M P4.
