BLACK SUNSHINE
The Story of My 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport 4x4
This story begins like most stories like it. At its roots, it is about the love we have for our cars and trucks.
My story started in November 1996, when I bought my black 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport 4x4 brand new. The second-generation Dodge Ram was unlike almost anything else on the road. It had bold styling, a high stance, Dana axles underneath, and a 318 V8 growling its way down highways and back roads.
I called it Black Sunshine.
I drove the truck for the next ten years while working through my engineering degree and beginning my career. During those years, Black Sunshine was constantly evolving. Lift kits came and went. Stereo systems were built and rebuilt. The engine received its share of modifications. There was always something else I wanted to change, improve, or make my own.
It was never simply transportation. It became part of my life.
By 2008, Black Sunshine had accumulated approximately 135,000 miles. I had been working professionally for several years and finally had something I did not have when I bought it: experience, resources, and the financial ability to build the truck I had dreamed about since falling in love with cars as a kid.
The project officially began on New Year’s Day 2008.
Piece by piece, I disassembled the truck in my parents’ garage. The interior came out. Trim came off. Mechanical components, wiring, brackets, and panels were removed. Eventually, a close friend who owned a body shop picked up what remained. We removed the cab and bed and completely stripped the chassis.
Black Sunshine had essentially ceased to exist as a truck.
What remained was a bare frame and a collection of parts.
Nothing was spared.
One principle drove everything that followed: if I was going this far, I was not going to cut corners.
This would not be a simple restoration. I wanted to rebuild Black Sunshine from the ground up while preserving what made the truck special.
I purchased a brand-new Mopar Performance long-block engine and brand-new transmission. The cooling system received a custom aluminum radiator and electric fans, while the exhaust was built from scratch with ceramic-coated headers and a custom stainless-steel exhaust system.
But underneath was where the true extent of the rebuild could be seen.
The entire frame was stripped and powder coated, along with the axles and suspension. Every single bracket on the truck was removed, stripped, and powder coated before being reinstalled. It did not matter whether a component would eventually be visible. If it came off, it was restored before it went back on.
Even the dashboard was stripped to its structural frame, which was removed, powder coated, and rebuilt to accommodate a completely redesigned electrical system.
Most people would never see it.
But I would know it was there—and that mattered.
That became the defining principle of the project:
The parts you could not see mattered just as much as the parts you could.
There is one exception.
Among the thousands of pieces that make up Black Sunshine, one component was deliberately left completely raw and untreated. Not because I forgot it, but because I wanted exactly one piece of the truck to remain untouched.
It became a hidden Easter egg somewhere in the build.
What that piece is, I will keep to myself.
The electrical system was completely redesigned and rebuilt around what the truck had become. Electrical power was upgraded with dual Optima batteries and a high-output alternator, supporting the new electrical architecture and another important part of Black Sunshine’s personality: the stereo.
At its center are two USA-made Soundstream amplifiers producing approximately 1,200 watts, paired with authentic German-made MB Quart three-way speakers. It was not built simply to be loud. I wanted power, clarity, and sound quality.
Before the interior went back together, the cab received three layers of sound-deadening material. The underside of the body was protected with bedliner material, while fasteners throughout the build were replaced where appropriate with stainless-steel or chrome-plated hardware.
The interior received custom upholstery, but I deliberately retained the original factory seats. I could have replaced them with something newer, but those were the seats that belonged in Black Sunshine. I wanted someone familiar with a second-generation Ram to immediately recognize what it was—and then slowly realize that virtually nothing had been left untouched.
Eventually, Black Sunshine began taking shape again.
Except this was not the truck I had taken apart.
It was the truck I had imagined all those years before.
I was not trying to return it to November 1996. I already knew what that truck was like.
I had bought it brand new.
Instead, I took everything I had learned—as a car enthusiast, as an engineer, and through years of owning the truck—and used it to build the version of Black Sunshine that had always existed in my head.
There is something meaningful about a truck that was part of my life while I earned my engineering degree later being rebuilt using the knowledge and experience that degree and my career had given me.
In a strange way, the truck and I grew up together.
I did not find Black Sunshine abandoned in a field. I did not buy someone else’s unfinished project. I did not discover it decades later and decide to restore it.
I was there at the beginning.
I bought this truck brand new. I put those 135,000 miles on it. I remember every version of it, every modification, every road trip, every problem, and every lesson it taught me.
Then I took it completely apart.
Every bolt. Every panel. Every system. Down to a bare frame.
And from that frame, I built it again.
Today, I am in a different chapter of life. As difficult as it is to say, I am looking for a new home for Black Sunshine. It pains me to watch something that means this much to me sit and collect dust. I would rather see it enjoyed by someone who understands the era and appreciates the craftsmanship, engineering, and history behind it.

There are newer trucks. There are faster trucks. There are trucks worth more money.
But there will never be another Black Sunshine.
You can replace parts. You can rebuild engines. You can repaint sheet metal. You can restore a frame until it looks better than the day it left the factory.
And that history is what makes Black Sunshine priceless to me.
