1979 was a very big year for the Trans Am, as Pontiac had their biggest sales year ever, moving 117,109 units. Of those 117,109 cars, only 5,402 (less than 5%) left the factory w/ the 400ci L78/W72 motor (all w/ manual transmissions), and only 2,485 of those cars left the factory w/out the T-top option. The car you are looking at right now is one of those cars!

This beautiful '79 Trans Am was purchased new @ McNamara Pontiac in Orlando, Florida, and left the factory finished in Mayan Red w/ a beautiful Oyster Vinyl interior. These Trans Ams came w/ a plethora of standard factory options, and this particular car was ordered w/ lots of additional factory options including: (L78) 6.6 Litre (400ci) V8 Engine w/ 4BBL, (W36) Special Performance Package, (C60) Factory Air Conditioning, (B18) Custom Trim Group (includes custom vinyl front bucket seats, custom vinyl rear seats, door handle ornamentation, pedal trim package, and custom interior appointments), (AK1) Custom Color Keyed Seat Belts, (A01) Soft Ray Glass All Windows, (B51) Additional Acoustical Insulation Package, (B80) Roof Drip Molding, and (UN3) Delco-GM AM/FM Stereo Radio w/ Cassette Tape Player. The WS6 Special Performance Package includes power-assisted 4-wheel disc brakes, thicker front & rear sway bars, tighter steering gear ratio, and 15" x 8" cast aluminum 'Snowflake' wheels. Pontiac stopped regular production of the 400ci L78 V8 block after 1978 due to emissions and fuel economy rules, so 1979 was the final year for the legendary 400ci motor. She now sits on our showroom floor here in Saint George, Utah, in absolutely beautiful condition!
This car was the recipient of a complete restoration back in 2007, both cosmetically and mechanically. Very little body work if any was required, as the car was in great condition to begin with. It was then repainted in its factory correct shade of Mayan Red, which is truly a gorgeous color that was professionally buffed & polished to a brilliant shine from front to back. Fresh 'Trans Am' decals were applied, as well as a fresh 'Screaming Chicken' decal on the hood. She rolls on the original 15" x 8" cast aluminum 'Snowflake' wheels, wrapped w/ BF Goodrich radial tires (P225/70/R15). You can walk around this car a hundred times and it looks amazing from every angle. The undercarriage is super clean w/ solid original black floors, new dual exhaust system, and correct components throughout (see photos).
When you open the driver's door, you will find a beautiful Oyster vinyl bucket seat interior w/ a matching Oyster vinyl rear seat, red dashboard, red center console, red steering wheel column, red Formula steering wheel, and red cut-pile carpeted lower door panels. Other interior features include: engine-turned aluminum dash panel insert, factory air conditioning, 4-speed Hurst shifter, Delco-GM AM/FM stereo radio w/ cassette player w/ dual rear speakers, and red cut-pile carpeting throughout. The interior is in excellent condition w/ only a few blemishes here & there including a small cracked circle on top of the dash. All of the gauges, lights, blinkers, etc., are in good working order including the original Delco-GM AM/FM stereo radio, and the factory air conditioning.
Pop-open the hood and you will find the original numbers matching 400ci L78 motor, which was completely rebuilt during the restoration process. A few modifications were done, including removing the cold air induction system that connected to the fender, which was a common modification as the induction system was quite restrictive. Other modifications include adding an Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold, and a Holley 80508S 750cfm carburetor, which performs much better and makes starting the car so much easier as well. The original 400ci motor is linked to the original Muncie M21 4-speed manual transmission, which feeds power to the original GM 8.5" 10-bolt Positraction rear end w/ 3.23 gears. She fires up instantly w/ a flick of the wrist, even when cold, and settles into a nice smooth idle. This '79 Trans Am runs, drives & performs beautifully in every way, and is an absolute blast to drive. You will find plenty of power & torque when you apply your right foot, and she handles beautifully as well. The first thing that stood out to me was that there are no rattles, no squeaks and no weird noises whatsoever, just a nice smooth ride. This car gets a ton of attention anywhere she goes, and there are always folks gathered around snapping photos on their smartphones. This beautiful 1979 Trans Am 400ci 4-speed car is fully documented, including the original factory build sheet, full PHS documentation, reproduction window sticker, the original 1979 Firebird owner's manual w/ all of the original manual supplements, and various other documentation (see photos).
If you have been searching for a vintage Pontiac Trans Am in arguably the most beautiful color combinations available, this may just be the car for you. When you factor in the original numbers-matching drivetrain, the limited numbers that were built w/ the last of the legendary 400ci motor, the beautiful restoration, and the bulletproof documentation, well you would probably have to look long & hard to find a finer example that this gorgeous 1979 Pontiac Trans Am 400ci 4-Speed car!
