Here is a great way to drive a sleek looking European convertible for a fraction of the expected budget. This 1997 Jaguar XK8 has all the panache of a classic drophead with a shape, curves, and proportions that harken to the classic E-type. But that’s where the similarities end, as this one has advanced beyond the idiosyncrasies and compromises that can plague vintage Jaguars.
This example has a clean history and remained with its original owner for most of its life, accumulating 56k of its 60k miles. The original sales paperwork is included and shows a sale price of $69,500 - equivalent to a prodigious $145,000 in today’s money. Service receipts are also included. The car has a rich look with its white paint and tan power top that can be raised or lowered with the push of a single button and includes a parade boot. The factory 5-spoke alloy wheels wear tires from 2025.
Power comes from Jaguar’s aluminum 4.0L V8 engine rated at 290 hp. Note the timing chains have been serviced. The transmission is a 5-speed automatic that offers manual gear shifting if desired. The suspension is more touring than sport which makes for a very comfortable ride. Brakes are 4-wheel discs with ABS along with stability and traction control. The steering is more precise than you might expect from such a car, adding a little flair to the driving experience.
As a Jaguar, the interior is finished in high quality Connolly leather with wooden accents throughout. The attractive dashboard is simple and clean with all essential gauges easy to see along with an analog clock – nice! Other features include heated front seats and automatic climate control with cold air conditioning. An aftermarket Sony head unit with Bluetooth has been properly installed and works with the factory steering wheel controls. As an XK8, the rear seat has limited legroom, though the trunk compartment offers a nice amount of storage space. All owner’s manuals are included along with a car cover.
This Jaguar really makes a statement. It has a look that suggests something far more expensive but is also a reliable car that can be driven every day. And it has a ride you would expect from the marquee. It’s hard to believe such a modern classic can be had at this price point.
