The first Ferrari to bear the 'Testa Rossa' (red-head) name was the 500 TR released in 1956. Powered by a 2.0L 'Lampredi' four-cylinder featuring red cam covers (hence the name), the 500 TR (and the later 500 TRC) proved successful in racing, particularly by independent teams. Ferrari again used the 'Testa Rossa' name for the far more recognizable and successful 250 Testa Rossa, this time powered by a 3.0L 'Colombo' V12 and featuring distinctive "pontoon" fenders reminiscent of the period's Formula 1 cars. A style that soon became almost as iconic as the name, the 250 TR went on to be produced in various guises through 1961.
During that time, the 250 TR won ten World Sports Car Championship including the 24 Hours of Le Mans (1958, 1960, and 1961). These wins led to three World Sports Car Championship constructor's titles for Ferrari those same years. Due to its success, the 250 TR, much like the famous 250 GTO that came later, has become one of the most valuable classic Ferraris ever built. Unsurprisingly, a great many recreations and replicas of this model have been released, with the best and most accurate being built on 250 GT chassis and using original Ferrari drivetrains.
The incredible 1958 250 Testa Rossa Recreation featured here is one such car. After leaving the factory as a 250 GTE Coupe by Pininfarina, the car was purpose-reworked with a steel tubular frame and a beautifully executed pontoon-fender 250 TR body was then mounted over that structure. The car's Ferrari Tipo 128/F Colombo V12 was modified with Weber 38 DCN carburetors for greater performance. Because of its exceptional accuracy, this is the perfect car to be shown or driven by its next caretaker. Offered to the discerning collector or enthusiast who appreciates its iconic appearance and exceptional build quality!
