HISTORY OF THE MGB MARK 1
Introduced as the successor to the MGA, the MGB represented a
significant evolution for the Abingdon marque. Under the direction
of MG Chief Engineer Syd Enever, development centered around
creating a sports car that retained the responsive character and
accessibility that had made the MGA successful while offering
greater comfort, practicality and refinement.
Among the MGB's most significant departures from its predecessor
was its monocoque, or unitary, body construction. Replacing the
MGA's traditional separate chassis, the new design provided
increased structural rigidity while allowing greater passenger and
luggage space within a relatively compact footprint. Its handsome
bodywork was shaped under MG stylist Don Hayter, resulting in a
clean and remarkably enduring design that would remain instantly
recognizable throughout nearly two decades of production.
The MGB made its public debut in 1962 and quickly found an
enthusiastic audience, particularly in the important North American
export market. Power came from BMC's proven 1.8-liter B-Series
four-cylinder engine, while front disc brakes, rack-and-pinion
steering and a four-speed manual gearbox contributed to the
responsive and approachable driving experience that became
hallmarks of the model. Combining traditional British roadster
character with improved comfort and everyday usability, the MGB
would ultimately become the most successful sports car in MG's
history.
Continuous development brought a number of refinements during the
early years of production. By 1965, the MGB had gained push-button
exterior door handles and, importantly, the more robust
five-main-bearing version of the 1.8-liter B-Series engine. These
improvements arrived while the car still retained the clean
chrome-bumper styling, compact proportions and straightforward
character that distinguish the early Mark I generation.
Production of the MGB continued through 1980, by which time more
than half a million examples of the MGB and related MGB GT had been
produced. Its combination of handsome styling, mechanical
simplicity, excellent parts support and engaging road manners has
ensured an enthusiastic following long after production ended.
Today, early Mark I examples remain particularly appealing to
enthusiasts seeking the MGB in one of its purest forms.
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
The 1965 MG MGB Mark I Roadster featured here is finished in the
handsome, period-correct color combination of Tartan Red over a
Black interior with contrasting Red piping. A Black "Pack-Away"
convertible top and matching Black tonneau cover complete the
quintessential British roadster appearance.
Completed at the Abingdon works during the summer of 1965, the
car's earliest history remains undocumented. Its known story begins
in the 1990s, when the engine was reportedly rebuilt in 1995 with
.040" oversize pistons and rings along with hardened valve seats
for compatibility with unleaded fuel. The odometer was reportedly
reset following completion of the rebuild, and its present reading
of 16,198 miles is therefore believed to represent the mileage
accumulated since 1995.
Just 3,410 miles later, in 1998, the MGB was acquired by a resident
of South Bend, Indiana, who would become its caretaker for nearly
two decades. During this long-term ownership, the car underwent a
cosmetic restoration that included a complete respray in Tartan Red
along with the installation of a new Black interior accented by Red
piping. Following nearly 20 years in Indiana, the MGB was acquired
by a Missouri resident in 2018.
IT'S ALIVE! AUTOMOTIVE acquired the car in 2022 and was immediately
impressed by both its presentation and thoughtful mechanical
enhancements. Among the upgrades already fitted were an Aluminum
Radiator, PerTronix Electronic Ignition, Spin-On Oil Filter
Conversion and Braided-Steel Oil Cooler Lines-sensible improvements
aimed at reliability and ease of maintenance while preserving the
fundamental character of the MGB. During our ownership, cracked
Steering Rack Boots and Clamps were replaced, the front end was
aligned and new Clutch Hydraulics were installed.
The MGB subsequently caught the attention of a local enthusiast who
purchased the car from IT'S ALIVE! in January 2024. In 2025, the
car returned to our shop for routine maintenance and additional
sorting. Our technicians performed a comprehensive tune-up that
included new Spark Plugs, Ignition Wires and Carburetor Jet Needles
followed by tuning of the twin SU Carburetors. Additional service
included replacement of the Engine Oil Pan Gasket along with a rear
brake service utilizing new Brake Shoes and related hardware.
After enjoying the MGB for more than two and a half years, a change
in lifestyle led its current owner to return the car to IT'S
ALIVE!, this time entrusting us to market and sell it on his
behalf. Its return gives our team the uncommon advantage of
offering a classic with which we have maintained firsthand
familiarity since initially acquiring it in 2022.
Today, the MGB performs as well as it presents, remaining a
well-sorted and enjoyable driver-quality example. Despite the age
of its cosmetic restoration, the Tartan Red finish and contrasting
interior continue to present remarkably well, with their
preservation consistent with the modest mileage reportedly
accumulated since the 1995 engine rebuild.
Combining desirable early Mark I character with thoughtful
reliability upgrades, long-term previous ownership and recent
servicing by our own technicians, this 1965 MGB represents an
