For Sale: 1953 Willys Aero in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

1953 Willys Aero Falcon 2 Door Sedan

Known more for their 40's era coupes and later Jeep related vehicles, Willys-Overland also produced a number of cars and trucks before selling to Kaiser-Frazer in 1953. In fact, they were the second largest producer of cars between 1912 and 1918. The Aero was first produced in 1952 as a compact car with sub models that included the Lark, Wing, Falcon, Ace, or Eagle depending on engine and trim level.

For consignment, a 1953 Willys Aero Falcon 2 door sedan showing 52,548 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a PA title exemption. Though some of the car has been restored, our consignor states that the plastic coverings on the seat were put on when the car was new!

Exterior
You're looking at two stage Willow Green paint with light Jasper Green on the roof, nicely complemented by white wall tires on 15-inch wheels. The tasteful side trim, window reveals, and metalwork all work together on this little car and the slab sided profile mirrors that of larger cars of the era. Up front, the distinct Willys "W" fronts a robust chrome grille bar and a jet age hood ornament surges forward. That W is seen again on the hubcaps which are surrounded by grooved beauty rings. Slight raises on the rear fender are capped by rounded tail lights and the decklid feature external hinges and the requisite "W". Imperfections include chips throughout, peeling silver paint, slight pitting in metal, scuffs, a dent on the rear bumper, and bubbling on the hood.

Interior
Two shades of gray panels alternate on the doors with red piping the delineates the center stitched insert. There's patina on both, especially the driver's side where the painted gray header is worn and the armrest shows a tear. Both the split bench front seat and rear bench are dressed in striped, tan cloth, completely encapsulated by protective plastic. The plastic is intact and as such, the seats remain in great condition. A clean, crisp dashboard awaits, dressed in gray paint and fronted by the black steering wheel with bright red Willys logo in the hub. A single gauge is ahead and a row of knobs live to the right. Rubber covers the floor and a mohair-like headliner is above, showing a tear and some staining. The trunk shows some appropriate patina and has a plaid mat to cover the floor.

Drivetrain
Under the hood is a 161ci flathead six cylinder in driver quality condition with a 1-barrel carburetor and 75 horsepower. It's mated to a 3-speed manual transmission with overdrive and power is routed to the rear axle with 4.10 gears. The car runs on a six volt system.

Undercarriage
Driver quality is found underneath as well with surface rust, some residual oil under the engine and rear differential, and some light surface rust on the door bottoms. A single exhaust runs through a stock style muffler before heading out and drum brakes are found on all four wheels. Suspension consists of coil springs in front and leaf springs in back.

Drive-Ability
We take this happy little car around the test loop to see what she can do and are not disappointed with the simple operation, good running engine, and nice visibility. We note the car pulls right on braking and the heater blower is not working, but all other functions operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

The Aero line all shared a family similarity although only the Falcon and Lark retained the two piece windshield, while the Ace and Eagle received a one piece. Despite about 41,000 cars produced in 1953, these are considered rare today and although many Willys cars have graced our halls, this is the first Aero Falcon, and it's a great example!
