The 1968 Mercury Monterey represents a great era of full-size
American cruising, combining big-block V8 power, spacious
accommodations, and unmistakable late-1960s styling. Finished in
Diamond Blue over a blue cloth interior, this Monterey has a
classic, period-correct appearance and shows 102,380 miles. Power
comes from its 390ci V8 paired with a C6 automatic transmission and
Ford 9-inch rear end. Power steering and power brakes make this
large Mercury comfortable and easy to enjoy on the road.
Purchased by its current owner in the summer of 2020, the Monterey
became a family project built with the intention of being kept
long-term. Over approximately 6,000 miles of ownership, a
significant amount of mechanical work was completed. The 390 V8 was
rebuilt with stock cam specifications, flat-tappet lifters,
hardened valve seats, and a .005-inch overbore. Additional work
includes a new carburetor, PerTronix electronic ignition
conversion, oversized alternator, radiator hoses, starter solenoid,
voltage regulator, heater core, and hoses. The C6 automatic was
also rebuilt with a new torque converter and TransGo shift kit. A
custom dual exhaust gives the big-block Mercury an appropriate V8
soundtrack.
The chassis and braking systems have received considerable
attention as well. The suspension features new springs, shocks,
ball joints, and an upgraded larger sway bar. The power steering
system received a new pump, lines, and steering gear. Braking
components include a new master cylinder, hubs, rotors, pads,
calipers, wheel cylinders, bearings, axle seals, parking-brake
cable, and new hard and soft brake lines. Fuel lines were also
replaced, along with the fuel sending unit. Tires were installed in
2021.
Inside, the Monterey retains its classic blue theme while
incorporating several comfort and convenience upgrades. The seats
have been rebuilt and fitted with custom covers while retaining the
original fabric underneath, and new carpeting has been installed.
The floors and doors received sound-deadening material, while
three-point seat belts were added for both front and rear
passengers. A modern double-DIN stereo provides wireless Apple
CarPlay and hands-free calling, supported by upgraded speakers, a
10-inch subwoofer, and a five-channel amplifier. Additional
conveniences include a backup-camera display in the rearview
mirror, integrated temperature and compass display, USB charging
ports, and tinted windows.
Exterior lighting has been converted to LED, and a passenger-side
mirror and backup camera have been added. The air-conditioning
system has received a new compressor and pump but still requires
lines to be completed and the system charged. One reverse light is
also noted to be very dim. With extensive mechanical refreshing and
thoughtfully integrated modern upgrades, this Diamond Blue Monterey
offers plenty of classic Mercury character in a comfortable
full-size cruiser.
