For Sale: 1981 Chevrolet Corvette in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1981 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible Mach 5 Replica

"The English rights to Mach GoGoGo were quickly acquired by syndicator Trans-Lux, with Peter Fernandez overseeing production of the dubbing with writing and directing. As the original Mach GoGoGo theme was considered to be too militaristic sounding by Fernandez, a rearranged cover melody was produced for USA sensibilities. The show would be rechristened "Speed Racer", with Go Mifune's own name becoming that, and all characters' names were localized while edits were also made to episodes to remove anything objectionable or that USA audiences would not understand. Speed Racer premiered in syndication in the summer of 1967, falling closely behind the Japanese original. All 52 episodes were translated." Speedracer.fandom.com

For consignment, a 1981 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible Mach 5 replica with unknown miles and no odometer. Move over Chim Chim, we've got a race to win! And we'll do it in this iconic television car. The Corvette retains its numbers matching engine.

Exterior
Not surprisingly, the car wears the colors of the Japanese national racing team, with a Classic White body and red circle on the door. The M on the hood contours to the pointed nose, flanked by similar fiberglass protrusions on the side, all intended to cut through the air. The fictional car had yellow paint under each extended fender and it's on this car as well while the rear fin-like appendages on the fenders are similar to Ultraman's helmet, and the rear points mirror the fronts, with blade shaped tail lights that may have come from a Cadillac. A fairing behind the driver's seat is Jaguar-esque and 15-inch aluminum slot wheels remind onlookers that there's a Vette under the fiberglass. Imperfections include some wavy fiberglass, orange peel surfaces, evident filler under paint, paint runs, and chips.

Interior
Red vinyl and carpet door panels are clean and lack all hardware except the opener and both present cleanly. Red and black racing seats occupy the cabin and are in fine shape. Up front, a four spoke steering wheel with five of the seven accessory buttons present, (A and D are missing). The Corvette instrument cluster has been replaced with an aluminum plate, but the standard center stack gauge cluster is still present, along with a fabricated racing panel with various toggles. Bright red flat surfaces make up the main body of the dashboard and red carpet covers the floor. Aluminum panels form the center console from which the shifter and emergency brake emerge.

Drivetrain
Under the hood is the numbers matching 350ci V8, white a white shroud marked with the red M, a 4-barrel carburetor, and 190 horsepower. It's mated to a 3-speed automatic transmission that routes power to the limited slip rear axle with 2.87 gears. The car has power steering and power brakes but sadly, no cutting blade or frogger mode. Our consignor states there is a newer water pump, distributor, radiator, alternator, starter, wiring harness, and battery.

Undercarriage
We find a little bit of rust, some surface rust, and residual oil on the pan underneath where the dual exhaust travels through some flex pipe and runs in tandem to exit through two chrome tips, no mufflers and no catalytic converter. Power disc brakes are on all four wheels and our consignor states there are new rotors, calipers, pads, lines, and hoses. The fully independent suspension includes coil springs under the nose and transverse leaf springs and strut rods are out back.

Drive-Ability
A matching helmet comes with the car, but we'll forgo wearing it for now. The driver's door does not open from the outside and unlike Speed Racer, we won't be jumping over the top. The 350 starts without issue and a bellowing exhaust is noted. The Vette, er...Mach 5, tracks straight and handles well. There is no speedometer or odometer, no air conditioning or heat, no wipers. The reverse lights are not working but all other functions operate as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

Okay, Spritle, this is your chance to own a television icon (yeah, there was a movie too, but no one remembers that). If you grew up in the 60's and 70's, this was your first car crush. Long before Knight Rider, General Lee, and Miami Vice came this, a virtual Ginsu knife of crime fighting cars, and now you can own it!
