For Sale: 1965 Buick Riviera in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1965 Buick Riviera Hardtop

"A Riviera has a strange effect on people. Simply looking at one makes your mouth water, your eyes open wider and your heart beat faster. You grin admiringly when you notice the headlights, tucked behind shields that open with the touch of the headlight switch. You breathe harder when you turn loose some of those 325 horsepower. And that's just what happens to the driver. Wait till you see that awe a Riviera inspires in passersby! Amazing. Also attainable, for considerably less than you might expect." From a 1965 print ad.

For consignment, a 1965 Buick Riviera hardtop with a title verified 102,454 actual miles. This car retains its numbers matching 401ci engine and was restored some years ago.

Exterior
The front end is the money shot on a car that has several good money shots. The way the marker lights hide behind protruding, ribbed columns that don't just flank the grille, they envelope it with extra Black Cherry paint between the ribs. The eggcrate grille runs widely, coming to a subtle point over the contouring chrome bumper. There's some curvature to the hood with center channel trim that contains a gunsight "R" hood ornament. In back, a long decklid meets body work and the tail lights are embedded in the chrome bumper, low slung capping the end of this classy cruiser. Ribbed rocker trim is a nice complement to the headlight covers and falls between 15-inch Buick Rally wheels and white wall tires with an early 2024 date code. The metal work and paint are overall fantastic, with imperfections noted, some minor inclusions and a few small dings in stainless trim.

Interior
Door panels are handsomely designed, here in attractive black materials that are accented with a woodgrain insert with a black border and a Riviera badge, along with ribbed metal switchgear and both present very nicely. Black grain vinyl adorns the bucket seats with ornamental buttons and tufting and along with the rear 2+2, all seats are in excellent condition. A two spoke steering wheel on a tilt column leads to a simple and well organized instrument cluster. An AM radio sits above the center stack and console, all backed by honey colored wood applique, and that's where you'll find separate heater and A/C panels along with a shifter that Frank Lloyd Wright could have designed. Meanwhile, we note a crack in the dash pad. Black carpet and Buick mats are on the floor, a black headliner above, and the large trunk is covered with a fitted mat and presents cleanly.

Drivetrain
Driver quality clean is the numbers matching rebuilt 401ci V8 with 325 horsepower and fueled by a 4-barrel carburetor. It's backed by an ST400 3-speed automatic transmission that routes power through 3.07 gears in the rear axle. Power brakes, power steering, and air conditioning are present on this well optioned car that also includes a rear defroster.

Undercarriage
Driver quality here as well with heavy metals colored by light surface rust and some residual oil showing up on the pans. The exhaust stands out as clean, and the dual system finds a Flo-Pro Max muffler that emits two tailpipes. Power drum brakes are found on all four wheels and coil springs are at both ends with a 3 link and a panhard bar helping out in back.

Drive-Ability
Will this black beauty run as good as it looks? Well, the engine fires right up, idles nicely, and the car moves well onto the test loop with good power, straight tracking, and good handling where the 75 series tires thwart asphalt imperfections nicely. We note the A/C, horn, horn button under the dash, clock, radio, and power seat are not working. All other items work as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

Riviera design has always stood out. Everyone has their favorite year or generation. This one often tops that list. It's an amazing design and this fine example is a fantastic representation with a great paint, a clean interior, iconic clamshell headlight doors, and the original engine!
