For Sale: 1963 Triumph TR4 in Grass Valley, California

Vehicle Description

This 1963 Triumph TR4 is a red-over-black example that was built in September 1962 and dispatched to San Francisco, California. The current owner purchased the car in 2016 from a friend who is said to have stored the vehicle in a garage for more than 30 years, and a rotisserie refurbishment was subsequently conducted. The factory 2,138cc inline-four was revised with Weber carburetors, a TWM intake manifold, an aluminum radiator, and an Abarth exhaust system. The removable Surrey hardtop consists of both an alloy roof panel and a soft center section, and is noted to have been refreshed with paintwork, a replacement headliner, and rubber seals while the 15″ steel wheels were powder-coated and the hubcaps were fitted with replacement emblems. Equipment further includes a factory vinyl soft top, a four-speed manual transmission, Wilwood front disc brakes, and heated seats. In August 2024, the distributor cap and ignition rotor were replaced, the fuel tank and carburetors were cleaned, and the valves were adjusted. This TR4 is now offered on dealer consignment with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, an owner’s manual, refurbishment photos, records from current ownership, a tool kit, and a clean California title. Finished from the factory in Signal Red, the car was repainted during the aforementioned refurbishment. The Surrey hardtop comes with a removable soft center section as well as an aluminum hard center panel. Additional exterior details include chrome bumpers, a flip-up fuel-filler cap, and dual exhaust outlets.

Powder-coated 15″ steel wheels are noted to have been straightened, and wear factory hubcaps with replacement emblems and a set of 165-series Michelin XWX tires. Wilwood calipers are paired with front disc brakes, which are complemented by rear drums. The black leather front bucket seats have been updated with two-stage electric heaters. The white dashboard houses a locking glovebox, and the door panels offer storage pockets. Sound-deadening material was added before German wool carpeting with leather bindings was installed. The dash pad, door seals, door panels, door handles, seatbelts, and turn-signal switch are also among the components that were replaced during the refurbishment. The banjo-style steering wheel frames Jaeger instrumentation consisting of a 120-mph speedometer and a rebuilt 6k-rpm tachometer, while gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, and fuel level are located at the center of the dash alongside a Lucas ammeter. The 2,138cc inline-four was rebuilt around 2010 and has been modified with a TWM intake manifold, a pair of Weber 40 DCOE carburetors, an aluminum radiator, and an exhaust header. The cylinder head was rebuilt in 2018. The distributor cap and ignition rotor were replaced, the fuel tank and carburetors were cleaned, and the valves were adjusted in August 2024, at which point the carburetor jets also were replaced. Power is routed to the rear wheels through a replacement four-speed manual transmission that was rebuilt in 2017. The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate shows factory equipment and indicates that the car was dispatched to San Francisco in North American specification on October 1, 1962. The engine number CT14029E specified on the certificate aligns with the engine stamping number shown in the gallery. The California title cites the car’s VIN as STC63CT14717L, prepended by “STC63”, whereas the Triumph’s actual chassis number is CT14717L. An extra tag bearing the STC63 sequence is attached to the vehicle adjacent to the regular identification tag. $39,900
