For Sale: 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 in Madisonville, Texas

Vehicle Description

This 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 is a genuine S-code 390-4V car, documented by a Deluxe Marti Report and finished in its original Candyapple Red with a black Mach 1 interior. Built at Ford's Dearborn assembly plant on December 18, 1968, and ordered through the Houston DSO, it was particularly well equipped from new.

The factory specification included the 390 cubic-inch FE V8, C-6 SelectShift automatic transmission, power steering, power front disc brakes, SelectAire air conditioning, AM/FM stereo, tilt-away steering wheel, tinted glass, Sport Deck rear seat, and a 3.00:1 conventional rear axle. It is an unusually complete option package for an S-code Mach 1 and is fully documented by the Marti Report.

The 390 FE sits in a beautifully detailed engine compartment and is topped by a shaker-style hood scoop and air cleaner assembly. The factory air conditioning remains in place with a modern Sanden compressor, while the original power steering system has been converted to electric assist. Both changes were made with drivability in mind without substantially altering the appearance of the car.

Candyapple Red paint is paired with reflective gold Mach 1 striping, black rear window louvers, and a rear deck spoiler. Chrome Magnum 500-style wheels with black centers are fitted with F60-15 Wide Oval-style raised-white-letter tires, giving the car the stance and appearance associated with Ford's late-1960s performance Mustangs.

Inside is the correct-style black Mach 1 interior with Clarion Knit/Vinyl high-back bucket seats, Sport Deck rear seat, and the factory tilt-away steering column.

The appeal of this car starts with what it was when it left Dearborn: a documented S-code 390 Mach 1 with air conditioning, power disc brakes, tilt-away steering, and an excellent group of factory options. The few later changes largely follow the appearance of Ford's period performance equipment and can be clearly distinguished from the car's documented factory specification.

Historical Overview

The Mach 1 debuted for 1969 as Ford's new performance-oriented Mustang SportsRoof and immediately became one of the most successful additions to the Mustang lineup. Ford offered it with engines ranging from the 351 Windsor through the 428 Cobra Jet, giving buyers considerable freedom in specifying anything from a comfortable performance-oriented road car to a serious street machine.

The S-code 390-4V FE occupied an important place in that lineup. The 390 had already established itself in Ford's full-size performance cars and earlier Mustangs, and in the new Mach 1 it offered big-block power without stepping up to the considerably more expensive 428 Cobra Jet.

The Mach 1 package brought more than additional performance. Unique interior trim, high-back bucket seats, competition-style exterior details, and distinctive Mach 1 identification separated it from the standard Mustang SportsRoof.
