For Sale: 1970 Chevrolet Malibu in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu Hardtop

If you're confused as to why people refer to Chevelles and Malibus as the same car, it's because Malibu was a trim level of the Chevelle from 1964 to 1977. The Malibu wasn't a separate model until 1978. No Chevelles originally had a woodgrain console. If you see one with a woodgrain console now, it's likely from a Monte Carlo. There was a version of the Chevelle only available in Canada that had a slightly different grille and trim. It was called the Pontiac Beaumont.

For consignment, a 1970 Chevrolet Malibu Chevelle hardtop showing 59,898 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a PA title exemption. This stunning A-body has been in the same family since 1991, was restored in 2024 and retains its numbers matching drivetrain.

Exterior
The original color was so good, why not keep it, and keep it they did, this time with modern, two stage application and the Fathom Blue covers this car beautifully and it's straight panels. A slight offset is provided by the clean vinyl roof in black which is outlined in trim that visually connects with that of the cabin and over the points of the fenders. Wheel opening and rocker trim add to the aesthetic appeal of this beauty and the 14-inch Chevrolet Rally wheels with letters out tires are icing on the cake. The chrome bumper in back hosts the embedded tail lights, square and muscular, a profile that is strengthened by the sizable chrome exhaust tips below. Up front, the egg crate grille, headlight bezels, and chrome bumper are in perfect condition and the call outs and metalwork are crisp. Imperfections are few and include a hood gap issue, off color chip corrections, general minor inclusions, edge chips, and some dimples in the lower valance.

Interior
In their original configuration, we find door panels with straight vinyl patterns in black with thin, chrome metal trim rises above the armrest and also delineates the door panels below where it goes from ribbed design to smooth black vinyl and both present cleanly. The front split bench and rear seats are covered in black vinyl as well, with bands of woven patterned inserts adding character and probably some grip. Up ahead, the standard Chevelle steering wheel fronts the original dash, showing a touch of patina with weather silver paint on labels and cloudy plexiglass in front of the sweep speedometer. To the right, you'll find a refreshingly original AM/FM radio, A/C panel, and requisite lighter. The open floor is home to black looped carpet and vintage style Chevelle rubber mats, the headliner is high and tight and home to the shoulder belts, and the trunk has a fitted rubber mat, spare tire and shows spots of surface rust on the spatter paint of the stamped steel floor.

Drivetrain
When you took delivery of your Malibu in 1970, this is what you'd see. Here's the numbers matching 350ci L65 V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor and 250 horsepower mated to the numbers matching TH350 3-speed automatic transmission that routes power to the 10 bolt rear axle with 2.56 gears. When it came time to replace your OEM AC Delco battery, you'd probably go to a Sears Diehard back in the day, and that's in place here along with power steering and air conditioning.

Undercarriage
Also refreshingly original looking, the underside is home to some typical surface rust, oxidation and some residual oil but is otherwise clean and structurally sound. The door bottoms are clean and rust free. Down here, you'll find dual exhaust running through FlowMaster mufflers and terminating through expanded chrome tips and drum brakes on all four corners. Coil springs are found front and rear with a 4 link in back.

Drive-Ability
Just as it's done since 1970, the 350 under the hood comes to life and the column shifter sends the car forward and around our test loop where it performs as good as it looks, tracking straight and handling well while providing good power and stopping on demand. Not a lot of bells and whistles here but everything on board works as it should and we're ready to put this one under the lights. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

This is simply a spectacular version of a once common car. More than 250,000 two door Malibu coupes were built in 1970 and you may be hard pressed to find one that is as good as condition and this restored beauty. Make room on your trophy shelf, this is a winner!
