The Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu Sport Coupe remains the quintessential silhouette of American muscle. Built as a factory V8 Malibu Sport Coupe (13637) at GM's Baltimore, Maryland assembly plant, this Chevelle packs a healthy, high-compression small block powertrain into an aggressive, head-turning street cruiser.

Factory Identification & Drivetrain Decoding:

Chassis VIN (136371B197147): Chevrolet Division (1), Malibu V8 Series (36), 2-Door Sport Coupe (37), Built at the Baltimore, Maryland Assembly Plant (B).

Engine Suffix Code (T0525CMJ): Small Block 350ci V8 assembled at GM's Tonawanda, NY engine plant (T) on May 25th (0525).

Engine Partial VIN (16D514293): Sourced from a 1976 (6) Chevrolet (1) assembled at the Doraville, GA plant (D).

Performance Powertrain & Mechanicals:

Under the hood sits a built 350 cubic-inch V8 with fewer than 1,000 miles on the build. The engine was put together with quality performance hardware throughout:

Internal Build: Forged crankshaft, forged connecting rods, 12:1 high-compression pistons, and a choppy "Mother Thumper" hydraulic camshaft.

Top End & Fueling: Dart II cylinder heads fitted with roller tip rockers, an electronic distributor, and a 650 CFM 4-barrel carburetor.

Exhaust & Sound: Full-length headers feeding into glasspack mufflers and tunable SuperTrapp disc exhaust tips for an aggressive vintage tone.

Transmission & Rear End: Mated to a freshly rebuilt TH350 3-speed automatic transmission that was completed at the same time as the engine build and shifts crisply. Power is delivered to a Chevy 10-bolt rear end equipped with a traction-locking differential-ensuring no "one-wheel peels" when you step into the throttle-backed by rear ladder bars.

The engine fires up with ease, exhibits zero valvetrain noise, and produces strong, healthy power for its class. It can benefit from some minor carburetor fine-tuning to get it 100% dialed in, but all the core high-performance components are in place and ready to enjoy.

The car is equipped with power front disc brakes and power steering, tracking and stopping straight. Please note that while this car was originally built as a factory air-conditioned vehicle, the A/C system is currently inoperable.

Suspension & Chassis:

The car was said to have undergone a body-off-frame restoration years ago. The frame and underbody structure are very solid and clean overall. We do note a patched section in the rear seat floor pan area underneath.

The front lower control arm bushings are worn and need replacement. Included with the sale of the car is a replacement front sway bar and replacement lower control arms to assist with the front-end suspension refresh.

Body, Paint & Cosmetic Transparency:

We believe in 100% upfront transparency so there are no surprises when the car arrives at your door. The car received a replacement left rear quarter panel and replacement front fenders, while the rest of the sheet metal appears original. There are a few small paint blisters along the lower body edges.

The Chevelle received a full repaint within the last 5 years in a two-stage metallic finish; however, it is a substandard paint job in our opinion. While it presents well from a distance, up close the clear coat reveals noticeable orange peel and "tiger striping" in the metallic base. It is the definition of a car that is "good from far, but far from good"-making it a great candidate to enjoy as a rowdy street cruiser, wrap, or take to the next level with a fresh respray down the road.

Interior & Functionality:

The cabin remains largely original. The front bench seat bottom and driver-side bolster show substantial age and wear, as visible in our photos and video. The windshield wipers and all exterior lighting operate as intended.

This 1971 Chevelle offers the perfect entry point for an enthusiast who wants solid small-block horsepower, durable internal engine components, a locking rear end, and the iconic A-body profile without having to pay show-car money.
