Early Jeep Gladiator pickups have a character all their own, combining rugged utility, distinctive styling, and the kind of straightforward mechanical design that helped establish Jeep as a serious name in four-wheel-drive vehicles. This 1964 Willys Jeep Gladiator J-200 4x4 is an especially honest example, retaining nearly all of its original paint, its original aluminum bed cap, and the desirable Thriftside step-side style bed. Rather than being restored or heavily modified, it remains a largely original truck that can either be preserved as-is or taken to the next level by its next owner.

Power comes from Jeep's 230 cubic-inch Tornado overhead-cam inline-six, one of the more interesting engines used in American trucks during the period. The engine was rebuilt in 1996 at 97,540 miles, providing an important piece of its mechanical history. It is paired with a three-speed manual transmission and four-wheel-drive system, giving the Gladiator the simple, hands-on driving experience expected from an early 1960s Jeep pickup.

One of the strongest aspects of this truck is its originality. The exterior retains its original paint everywhere except the two front fender flares, allowing the body to show its age honestly rather than hiding decades of history beneath a fresh restoration. For collectors who appreciate survivor vehicles, that kind of originality has become increasingly difficult to find. The original aluminum bed cap also remains with the truck, adding another uncommon period feature.

The Thriftside bed gives the Gladiator a more traditional pickup appearance with exposed rear fenders and a narrow step-side style box. What makes this J-200 appealing is the opportunity it presents. A full restoration could turn it into a standout early Gladiator, while its original paint, solid body, vintage bed cap, and honest patina make a strong argument for leaving much of it untouched. Either direction would preserve a truck that represents an important chapter in Jeep's early pickup history.
