This 1985 Mercedes-Benz 190D is a classic example of
Mercedes-Benz's famously durable W201 platform, combining simple
diesel power with the solid engineering that defined the brand
during this era. Finished in red over a tan interior, this 190D
retains a largely original appearance and offers plenty of
old-school Mercedes character.
The red exterior shows its age and should be considered
accordingly. The paint has areas of clear coat fading and
noticeable variation in the shades of red between different panels.
There are additional age-related cosmetic imperfections throughout,
making this a car that presents honestly rather than a highly
restored or show-quality example. The factory-style trim, black
bumpers, and Mercedes alloy wheels remain in place and give the car
its unmistakable period appearance.
Under the hood is the 2.2-liter four-cylinder diesel engine paired
with a 4-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. These
naturally aspirated Mercedes diesel engines are particularly well
known for their simplicity and longevity. The car is equipped with
power steering, power brakes, front disc brakes, and Mercedes'
multi-link independent rear suspension.
Several maintenance items were addressed in 2025, including
replacement of the alternator, serpentine belt, battery, fluids,
and filters. The rear sway bar links and transmission pan gasket
were also replaced. The CARFAX shows 115,826 miles and 20 recorded
service history entries, with no odometer rollback indication or
title brands reported. It does show a moderate accident involving
another motor vehicle dating back to October 1995.
Inside, the tan interior provides a classic contrast against the
red exterior and retains the straightforward, functional design
associated with Mercedes-Benz models of the 1980s. The large analog
gauges, simple center stack, automatic floor shifter, and generous
glass area give the cabin the unmistakable feel of a vintage German
sedan.
The 190D was never about outright speed; its appeal lies in its
mechanical simplicity, efficiency, and the reputation of
Mercedes-Benz's diesel engines from this period. With its honest
cosmetics, recent maintenance, and classic W201 styling, this 1985
Mercedes-Benz 190D offers an approachable way to enjoy one of
Mercedes-Benz's most recognizable compact sedans.
