Cruisin Classics is pleased to present this 1961 Pontiac Bonneville
two-door hardtop. This car was Pontiac's flagship full-size luxury
car back in 1961 and it's still a real head-turner today. This
particular Bonneville offers the opportunity to get into a highly
desirable bubble-top Pontiac at a price that won't require getting
a second mortgage. At some point in the past, this Bonneville was
given a respray in white paint. A close inspection reveals some
imperfections and previous bodywork that put the car in the average
driver-quality category, but from 10 feet you don't see anything
but a cool bright white old-school cruiser. Up front is the
signature split chrome eggcrate grille with bright surround and
twin side-by-side headlights in bright bezels. Underneath is a
chrome bumper with integrated turn signals. On the sides, a chrome
spear runs tip to tail and features gold "Bonneville" lettering and
red accent streaks. There is quite a bit of brightwork on this
Pontiac - windshield surround, drip rail, window trim, and door
handles all gleam in the light. Perfectly complementing the side
view are a set of 14" black steel wheels with "Pontiac Motor
Division" poverty caps all wrapped in Cooper Cobra Radial GT tires.
At the rear of the car you'll find two sets of round triple
taillights in bright surrounds with gold block letters spelling
"BONNEVILLE" in between. The understated rear fins are both dressed
up with chrome caps above the chrome bumper. There is a slightly
worn Pontiac dart badge on the decklid and a single chrome exhaust
tip poking out from under the passenger side rear corner.
Under the hood in a clean flat black engine bay is a 389ci Pontiac
V8. The block, heads, valve covers, intake, and water pump are all
painted in traditional Pontiac light blue. Sitting atop is a
4-barrel carburetor with a black AC air cleaner. This hearty V-8 is
mated up to a Hydramatic automatic transmission that sends power to
the rear wheels. Looking ahead of the engine, you can see that this
car is equipped with power steering and a newer aluminum radiator.
Exhaust flows through cast manifolds and a single muffler before
exiting the rear. We did note that there is a hole in the muffler,
making it a little louder than it should be. Stopping power is
provided by 4-wheel power drum brakes.
Swing open the drivers door to find a very attractive red interior.
The original interior for this ride would have been tri-color, but
the seats, door panels, rear side panels, package tray, headliner,
and dashpad have all been re-covered in fresh red vinyl. The door
panels offer armrests, door handles, and cranks for both the vent
window and main window. A bright sill plate and fresh red hook &
loop carpet welcome you inside, where you'll find front bucket
seats with chrome trim and a rear bench seat. The seats are in
excellent condition and look as though they were just re-covered.
Splitting the front buckets is a chrome-topped center console
storage box. Ahead of the driver is a red 2-spoke steering wheel
with a horn ring (inop.) on a stationary column with a column
shifter for the automatic transmission. The turn signal indicator
lever clicks into place, up & down, but the turn signal lights are
inoperative. Ahead is a two-tiered red dash with a padded red vinyl
upper section and red painted lower. In the upper section you'll
find a generator gauge, a 120mph speedometer, and a gas gauge. To
the right of that is the original Pontiac AM radio (inop.), a clock
(inop.), and a passenger grab-handle. The lower section of dash has
controls for lights, wipers (inop.), a gear indicator, heat & fan
controls (inop.), a lighter (inop.), and a switch for courtesy
lights (inop.). There's also an ashtray and finished glovebox in
the dash. Around back in the trunk is a vinyl mat with matching
side-covers, a full spare with a vinyl cover, a factory-style jack,
and a set of 4 full-size hubcaps in good condition.
If you're hunting for a good looking affordable Pontiac bubble-top,
then you should give this one a serious look! Great color combo, a
389 V-8 under the hood, power steering, power brakes, and a
recently redone interior - this Bonneville has a lot to love! There
are indeed some little projects that need done, but that's why
we've priced this car so affordably. At this price, it surely won't
be here for long - so give our friendly staff a call and be the
lucky one to get behind the wheel!
