Introduced for the 1960 model year, the Porsche 356 B represented
the next evolution of the company's highly successful sports car
that had firmly established the Stuttgart marque as a leader in
lightweight performance and engineering excellence. While retaining
the unmistakable silhouette that made the 356 famous, the new
B-series incorporated numerous refinements, including revised
bodywork, improved bumpers, and enhanced driving characteristics,
further cementing its reputation among enthusiasts worldwide. Among
the most desirable variants was the 1600 Super, powered by
Porsche's air-cooled, 1.6-litre flat-four engine producing
approximately 75 horsepower. Though modest in output, the
lightweight construction and exceptional balance of the 356 B
delivered a spirited driving experience that emphasized agility and
precision over outright speed. Equally at home on winding roads or
long-distance tours, the 356 B embodied Ferdinand Porsche's
philosophy of efficient performance and engineering simplicity.
Finished in attractive Signal Red over a black leatherette
interior, this 1961 Porsche 356 B 1600 S Coupe represents a
beautifully restored example of one of Stuttgart's most beloved
sports cars. Presented with history from new, this 356 B has
enjoyed the care of just one family for the last 63 years.
Ownership history dates back to new, when the current owner's uncle
purchased this Porsche from its original owner, a fellow Ford Motor
Company engineer working at the Dearborn, Michigan proving grounds.
Reportedly prompted by the owner's wife to part with the car, the
first owner sold this 356 for approximately $3,000. Lifelong
residents of Michigan, the current owner can recall falling in love
with his uncle's Porsche at a young age. One of his favorite
memories was riding in this 356 B through the hills of Ann Arbor,
Michigan on their way to the "Big House" to watch a University of
Michigan football game. He hardly remembers the game but does
remember being captivated by this Porsche's impressive speed and
the way it conquered the curves and hills effortlessly. As he got
older, and became a senior in high school, he recalls constantly
dreaming of one day owning this Porsche, a familiar dream that many
of us car enthusiasts can relate to, as there's always that one car
that captivates the memory. Continuing to pursue his uncle to sell
him this 356, the day would finally come after nearly 50 years of
single ownership when his uncle handed him the keys in 2010; a
"lifelong" dream finally came true. Retaining this Porsche for a
number of years, the current owner then made the decision to embark
on a complete restoration, one that would make his uncle proud. The
timeless Reutter coupe body was stripped to bare metal and received
a repaint in Signal Red and features chrome wheels with
Porsche-crested hubcaps, Michelin Defender tires, and a bright
engine grille. Inside, the new black leatherette upholstery and
correct Porsche carpeting is complemented by restored gauges and a
radio, while upgraded sound deadening and 6-volt Bi-LED lighting
enhance comfort and usability. Power comes from its original and
professionally rebuilt flat-four engine by Euromotorworks and
Alpine Motor Werks that's backed by an upgraded clutch and original
rebuilt four-speed manual gearbox. During the rebuild, the case was
split and fitted with new internal components, while a big-bore kit
was added to provide increased performance. The cylinder heads were
refurbished with modern valve seats for compatibility with unleaded
fuel, and upgrades including an improved oil cooler, exhaust
system, electronic ignition and electronic fuel pump further
enhance reliability. At the same time, a new exhaust system was
also installed. The suspension and braking systems were
comprehensively renewed, and road testing was carried out to
fine-tune the drivetrain and handling, resulting in a Porsche
restored with both driving enjoyment and long-term dependability in
mind, which the current owner has done on various multi-hour-long
road trips. Accompanying the sale of this Porsche are restoration
invoices, a driver's manual, 356 B workshop and supplements manual,
mini toy car, a tool roll, jack, and spare tire. An automobile with
enduring international appeal, the Porsche 356 B continues to
captivate enthusiasts and collectors of every generation.
Beautifully restored and fine-tuned mechanically, this charming
example is now ready to be cherished, driven, and enjoyed by a new
family for the first time in more than 63 years, creating lasting
memories just as it has for its current caretaker since 1963. *
