This 1987 Buick Grand National is an exceptionally well-preserved
example of one of the most recognizable American performance cars
of the 1980s. Finished in its iconic black exterior over a black
and gray interior, this Grand National shows just 29,732 actual
miles and remains remarkably original. Rather than being restored
or heavily modified, the car retains its original 1987 paint,
factory wheels, original interior, and factory gauge cluster,
making it an increasingly difficult example to find in today's
collector market.
Under the hood is Buick's legendary turbocharged and intercooled
3.8L V6, paired with an automatic transmission. The turbocharged
Grand National became famous for delivering performance that
challenged many of the era's V8-powered sports cars while
maintaining the understated appearance of Buick's G-body coupe.
This example remains largely factory in presentation, with tasteful
additions including a stainless turbo cover and stainless exhaust
system that gives the car an appropriately aggressive exhaust note
without taking away from its original character.
Adding significantly to the appeal of this particular Grand
National is its documented history. Originally an Arizona car, it
later made its way to Florida, where it was offered by European
Classics Inc. in Oakland Park before being purchased and
transported to Indianapolis. Accompanying documentation includes a
copy of the original owner's title, previous purchase paperwork, an
odometer statement, and shipping documentation from Florida to
Indianapolis. A framed copy of the original build sheet is also
included and shows a build date of December 4, 1987, placing this
car among the very late-production examples from the Grand
National's final model year.
The car rides on Uniroyal Tiger Paw tires that were installed
approximately 500 miles ago, with supporting paperwork included.
The original tires have also been retained and can accompany the
car if desired. With its low mileage and unrestored nature, the
Grand National presents exceptionally well for a nearly
four-decade-old automobile while still displaying the authenticity
expected from an original car.
Its condition has also earned recognition on the show field. This
Grand National has received multiple Best in Show awards and has
taken first place both times it was entered at the World of Wheels
in Indianapolis. Those accomplishments speak to the quality of its
presentation while making its largely original condition even more
impressive.
The 1987 model year marked the end of the Grand National and the
culmination of Buick's turbocharged performance era, making these
cars some of the most collectible American automobiles of the
decade. With just 29,732 actual miles, original paint, factory
interior and wheels, extensive supporting documentation, a late
1987 build date, and proven show-winning presentation, this Grand
National represents a rare opportunity to own a highly preserved
example that can be equally enjoyed at a local show, on a weekend
drive, or simply as an important piece of 1980s American
performance history.
